Manchester United Opinion: Why Kieran Tierney will be a good fit for United?

Back in April last year, Manchester Evening News reported that Manchester United were interested in signing Celtic star Kieran Tierney. The Scottish defender had just signed a new deal with Celtic until 2023 and so there was no chance for Manchester United to sign him then.

Now, Kieran Tierney has already attracted interest from Leicester City and Arsenal and the 21-year-old could consider his options in the summer as he attempts to win back his place as first-choice for Scotland from Andy Robertson, claims the Sun.

Keeping that in mind, Manchester United should reignite their interest and rival Leicester City and Arsenal for Tierney’s signature.

United have a decision to make on whether Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is given the manager’s job on a permanent basis in the summer.

The Norwegian was given the job on a temporary basis following the sacking of Jose Mourinho but, having taken the Red Devils on a sensational run since taking over, calls have been made for the club to appoint him on a permanent basis.

Complete transformation in the team’s style of play and some incredible results—both domestic and Europe—have made it almost impossible for the United board to not hand Solskjaer the keys of the club.

With Solskjaer very likely to get the job on a permanent basis, focus should now shift on planning for the 2019/20 season.

United are expected to have a busy transfer window, with Solskjaer’s army keen to challenge for the title next season. The defence is an area which needs vast improvement if the Red Devils are to stand anywhere near to Manchester City and Liverpool.

Luke Shaw has been a stellar performer and has improved leaps and bounds under Solskjaer, but United lack depth at left-back beyond the England international.

Kieran Tierney’s profile, experience and performances over the last few seasons for Celtic make him an ideal fit at Old Trafford. He is one of the hottest properties in Europe and helped Celtic to the double treble last season.

A competent dribbler and a good passer of the ball, the Scotsman is a flying left-back, who can also play in central defence and right-back when required. He is a brilliant tackler and reads the game very well, making crucial interceptions.

While Tierney is an attacking full-back, he rarely looks out of depth when it comes to defending and is a very difficult player to get past in 1v1 situations. Furthermore, he is a real leader and has won every title in Scotland available at such a tender age.

He is one of the outstanding players at Celtic, with experience of winning four league titles and also playing in the Champions League.

Verdict

Tierney is still aged just 21 and certainly worth the investment, as he’s got all the potential and skill-set to be a force in the Premier League. United need a player to compete with Shaw at left-back and there’s hardly anyone better currently in terms of age, experience and maturity than the Celtic star.

Hence, the 20-time Premier League champions should do everything possible to add Tierney to their defensive ranks.
