Brendan Rodgers must ditch Newcastle to join Leicester City

According to a report from The Sun, Premier League outfits Newcastle United and Leicester City are interested in the services of Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers. The Magpies and the Foxes are viewing the Welshman as a possibility for the managerial role if and when they have a vacancy (h/t The Sun).

Rodgers has plenty of experience in the Premier League, having managed Swansea City before spending three years as Liverpool’s manager between 2012 and 2015. Having left the Merseyside outfit, the 45-year-old took over the reins at Celtic in 2016 and has achieved great success in Scotland.

In his two full seasons with the Hoops, Rodgers has led them to consecutive domestic trebles in the 2016/17 and the 2017/18 campaigns. After a dodgy start to the ongoing season, the Welshman has sparked a recovery at Celtic, as they find themselves in the second spot in the Scottish Premiership table while making it to the semi-finals of the Scottish League Cup.

His exploits up north in Scotland has seen his stock rise immensely. So, among Newcastle and Leicester, which club should Rodgers join?

Leicester City

The Foxes are going quite well in the ongoing campaign, sitting tenth after 8 matches. Under Claude Puel, Leicester City have developed into an exciting outfit. Despite losing star player Riyad Mahrez in the summer to Manchester City, they have coped well.

In James Maddison, the Foxes have one of the finest young talents in the country while the likes of Jamie Vardy, Demarai Gray, Kelechi Iheanacho, Harry Maguire etc., make for a well-balanced, impressive squad in totality.

Be it Puel or his predecessors at the club, the owners have enjoyed a good relationship with their managers in general and have shown that they are prepared to back them in the transfer window more often than not.

Newcastle United

Having returned to the Premier League in the 2017/18 campaign, Newcastle United finished in the tenth position. However, they find themselves in a bit of a bother in the ongoing term. Rafa Benitez’s men sit rock bottom in the Premier League, having managed to collect just two points from 9 outings.

The Spaniard, throughout his time at the St. James’ Park, has had a strained relationship with owner Mike Ashley regarding the lack of financial backing in the transfer window. And the lack of quality signings in the summer has been one of the primary reasons for the Tynesiders’ struggles in the ongoing campaign.

In comparison to Leicester City, Newcastle United don’t look all that balanced and in terms of quality across the pitch as well, it wouldn’t be wrong to say that the Magpies’ roster comes second best.

Verdict

A move to Newcastle would undoubtedly be appealing for Rodgers. However, considering the squad he will inherit and the fact that he is unlikely to receive adequate backing at Newcastle, the Celtic boss would be better off moving to Leicester City.
