Leicester City Opinion: Why the Foxes should snap up Fernando Llorente?

According to a report from The Sun, Leicester City and West Ham are set to battle for Tottenham striker Fernando Llorente.

The Spaniard, 34, who is set to become a free agent, has netted eight goals in 34 games for Spurs this season. While he has struggled for game time behind Harry Kane and Heung-min Son since his switch from Swansea City, the veteran striker has come up with some crucial goals when needed.

The report adds Fernando Llorente is set to leave Tottenham after the Champions League final with Liverpool on a free transfer. His availability on a free transfer has also attracted the likes of Napoli and Barcelona, but Leicester City must do everything possible to bring the big Spaniard to the King Power Stadium.

Brendan Rodgers arrived from Celtic mid-way through this past season and made a quick impact at Leicester. He quickly changed the club’s fortunes as the Foxes lost just three of their last 10 games in the Premier League. As a result, Leicester finished the campaign placed 9th in the table, just two points below Everton.

Now, Rodgers will be keen to make the most of the summer transfer window to reshape his squad ahead of the 2019/20 season. There are a lot of areas that need addressing, especially the forward department.

Shinji Okazaki was released by the club at the end of the campaign while Islam Slimani’s future at the club remains uncertain.

Jamie Vardy remains the club’s undisputed first-choice striker and while he has been prolific since Rodgers’ appointment, he is 32 and not getting younger. Kelechi Iheanacho has flopped at the King Power Stadium, although the Nigerian is expected to get a season under Rodgers.

Thus, that clearly demonstrates the Foxes’ need for a new striker this summer. At this moment, the signing of Fernando Llorente would make sense.

Llorente has chipped in with eight goals this season after a tricky first term with Tottenham, becoming vital in 2019 with Harry Kane enduring injury problems.

The Spaniard will be entrusted with a similar role at Leicester where he’ll support and add cover for Vardy. His best days are behind him but the ex-Athletic Bilbao and Juventus man will offer a different dimension to the Foxes’ attack.

A good finisher inside the box and a fantastic asset to have during set-pieces, Llorente’s acquisition will certainly boost Leicester’s chances of breaking into the top six next season.

Verdict

On a free transfer, Llorente would represent a shrewd piece of business for Rodgers. The Spanish centre-forward may not be the world-class star that the fans might be hoping for but he is someone who can make a real difference at the King Power Stadium next term.
