Why Memphis Depay must snub Tottenham to join Liverpool

Last season’s UEFA Champions League finalists Tottenham Hotspur and Liverpool are set to go head-to-head in the race to sign Lyon star Memphis Depay, according to a recent report by Italian publication Calciomercato (h/t The Sun).

The former Manchester United ace, who endured an ill-fated spell at Old Trafford, has overturned his fortunes in the Ligue 1. After severely failing to impress in the Premier League, Depay’s decision to move to the French top-flight has certainly worked wonders for his career.

Now, however, a return to England could be on the cards with both Tottenham and Liverpool keen on his services. As things stand, both clubs are capable of providing him with the stage to take his career to the next level but where should he go?

Depay to Tottenham

Tottenham started the season on a lukewarm note under former Mauricio Pochettino, despite being last season’s Champions League finalists. As a result, the Argentine was shown the door and the North Londoners appointed Jose Mourinho.

The Portuguese has managed to win his first two games in charge, with Spurs placed 5th in the table now. And considering Depay’s versatility and potency, he is capable of being a viable addition to the club.

At present, Tottenham have the likes of Christian Eriksen, Son Heung-min, Harry Kane, Lucas Moura and Dele Alli to slot into attacking roles but the Dutchman can easily play as a backup for any of these players.

Depay to Liverpool

As far as Liverpool are concerned, they are the leading title contenders and the defending champions in the Champions League as well. With stalwarts Sadio Mane, Mohamed Salah, Divock Origi and Roberto Firmino firmly established as Jurgen Klopp’s preferred starters, Depay might find it tough to land a regular starting role.

That said, the Dutchman, who has already scored 11 times in the league this term, would be part of a more reliable set up under the German boss, considering his ability to extract the best out of players.

Verdict

Mourinho’s spell at Manchester United was a rather forgettable one and since Tottenham have only recently undergone a managerial change, Depay would be wise to avoid moving to the North London outfit.

Liverpool, on the other hand, have tasted incredible success in recent years and given Klopp’s tactical nous, the winger would be a smart addition.
