Three ideal destinations for former Chelsea legend John Terry

According to Sky Sports, John Terry still has the determination and the hunger to keep playing and has hinted at a return to his former club Aston Villa.

The 37-year-old former Chelsea superstar looked in good shape last season, as he captained Aston Villa last season. However, the Villans fell agonizingly short of a promotion to the Premier League after their defeat to Fulham in the playoffs.

The transfer window has already closed and English clubs will not be able to sign any players, barring free agents, before January. A few Premier League and Championship clubs are going through a defensive crisis after failing to bolster their options at the back in the summer.

With that in mind, here are three ideal destinations for John Terry.

1.  West Ham United

Manuel Pellegrini’s side have made a terrible start to the Premier League season with four defeats out of four and the Hammers are currently at the bottom of the league table. Their previous season under Slaven Bilic and David Moyes was quite disappointing as well.

The Hammers barely avoided relegation and West Ham don’t seem to have recovered from their miseries despite signing heavyweight reinforcements in the form of Felipe Anderson and Andriy Yarmolenko.

The Londoners have already conceded 10 goals from their 4 games and it would be difficult for them to win the relegation battle if they continue to leak goals at such an alarming rate. New signings Fabian Balbuena and Issa Diop haven’t been up to the mark while Angelo Ogbonna and Pablo Zabaleta have lacked the composure to add any sort of solidity to the backline.

With his experience and leadership skills, Terry should be the perfect man to bring some discipline to the defensive third and his presence could help the Hammers achieve a better defensive record in the coming games.

2. Aston Villa

Aston Villa narrowly missed out on promotion last season and were expected to be one of the teams that would challenge for promotion this season. However, their performances in the Championship have been far from stellar.

Steve Bruce’s side have managed only two wins and a draw from their first six games and much of that has been down to some horrible defending. Villa have already conceded 11 goals this season and currently sit 12th on the table.

The centre-back pairing of Mile Jedinak and James Chester has shown little mutual understanding and has failed to cut out the attacks. Villa were badly stretched and ripped apart in the 4-1 defeat against Sheffield Wednesday last weekend.

Terry had formed a good partnership with Chester at the heart of Villa’s defence last season and Bruce should re-sign the former England captain to revive his hopes of promotion.

3. Leeds United

Leeds United have enjoyed a superb start to the season and sit atop the Championship table after five undefeated matches. Yet, there is a sense that the Whites have not done much to address their limited defensive options. One way they can change that is by signing free agent John Terry.

The former Chelsea defender has the experience this Leeds team lacks, and even at 37 years of age, he could be a big asset to the promotion-chasing side.
