He exacted revenge against Mezger at UFC 19, 2 years later in a first-round TKO win. Ortiz then suffered his second defeat against Frank Shamrock at UFC 22, before going on a six-match winning streak that included a light-heavyweight title win.
Ortiz defended the title 5 times before losing to Randy Couture at UFC 44 in September 2003. Following a loss to Chuck Liddell in his next fight, Ortiz went on a 5-fight winning streak before losing to Chuck Liddell, once again, at UFC 66 in December 2006.
