Thomas James Hockenson, a tight end with the Detroit Lions of the National Football League, was born on July 3, 1997.  At Iowa, he played college football. He received the John Mackey Award as the top tight end in college football as a redshirt sophomore in 2018.

He earned played defensive back and tight end, and he also established school records for receiving yards in a game, season, and career. As a senior, he led his team to the state playoffs and was named to the first team of all-state athletes.  The 247Sports.com Composite, which compiles the rankings of the top football recruiting agencies, evaluated Hockenson as a three-star recruit and the seventh-highest-rated recruit in the state of Iowa for the class of 2016.  On June 20, 2015, he made a commitment to the Iowa Hawkeyes.

TJ Hockenson College career

During his true freshman year in 2016, Hockenson red-shirted.

Along with Noah Fant, he was one of two tight ends in the starting lineup for Iowa’s 2017 season opener versus Wyoming. He recorded his first career receptions the next week against Iowa State, finishing with two catches for 41 yards in the game.

He led the team with five receptions for 71 yards and two touchdowns in Iowa’s shocking victory over then-No. 3 Ohio State, which was his finest game of the year. With 24 receptions for 320 yards and three receiving touchdowns, Hockenson ultimately finished fifth on the team for the season. 

Going into the 2018 season, both Hockenson and teammate Noah Fant were on the preseason watch list for the John Mackey Award. Hockenson achieved a career-high with 125 receiving yards in an early season loss against rival Wisconsin, which included a 46-yard pass from quarterback Nate Stanley.

On October 13 versus Indiana, he once more surpassed the 100-yard mark with four receptions for 107 yards and two touchdowns.

 In the end, he led the Hawkeyes in the first two categories and came in one receiving score behind Fant for the team lead with 46 receptions for 717 yards and six receiving touchdowns. The media voters selected him for the first-team All-Big Ten at a tight end, while the coaches placed him behind Fant on the second team. The Kwalick-Clark Award, given to the Big Ten’s tight end of the year, went to him as well.  Hockenson received the John Mackey Award in 2018, which recognized him as the best tight end in college football. He is the first sophomore and the second Hawkeye to win the prize, following Dallas Clark in 2002.

Hockenson declared on Twitter on January 14 that he would quit school early to enter the 2019 NFL Draft.

TJ Hockenson NFL career 

The Detroit Lions selected Hockenson with the eighth overall pick in the first round of the 2019 NFL Draft. Hockenson and the Lions agreed to a four-year, $19.8 million contract on May 9, 2019. 

2019

On September 8, 2019, Hockenson took the field for his first regular-season contest against the Arizona Cardinals. The game concluded in a tie, 27-27, with him having six receptions for 131 receiving yards and a touchdown. In NFL history, Hockenson’s 131 yards in his debut were the most by a tight end. Hockenson caught three catches for 27 yards and a touchdown in Week 4’s matchup with the Kansas City Chiefs before leaving the game because of a concussion. The Lions suffered a 34–30 defeat without Hockenson.   His injury reserve status was activated on December 2, 2019.   He had 32 receptions for 367 yards and two scores toward the end of the season. 

2020

On July 29, 2020[20], the Lions placed Hockenson on the reserve/COVID-19 list; he was then activated ten days later.

Against the Chicago Bears in Week 1, Hockenson made his injury comeback. Hockenson caught five catches for 56 yards and his first season-opening receiving score during the game, which the Lions lost 27-23. Hockenson caught the go-ahead touchdown throw from Matthew Stafford on October 25 during a Week 7 game against the Atlanta Falcons, giving the Lions their third victory of the year. He received his 2021 Pro Bowl selection on December 21, 2020. 

2021

As the Lions’ starting tight end heading into the 2021 season, Hockenson. After having thumb surgery, he was put on injured reserve on December 17, 2021. Through his final 12 games, he had 61 receptions for 583 yards and four touchdowns.

2022

On April 26, 2022, the Lions exercised Hockenson’s fifth-year option.

Hockenson set the all-time Lions record for receiving yards in a game by a tight end in Week 4’s 48-45 loss to the Seattle Seahawks with 179 yards on eight catches. Jim Gibbons’ previous record of 161 yards, achieved on December 13, 1964, was surpassed by this.
