Ciampa received training from WWE Hall of Famer Killer Kowalski. Ciampa made his debut back in January 2005. He wrestled in independent promotions in Massachusetts like Chaotic Wrestling and Top Rope Promotions among others. Ciampa’s first championship came in the Chaotic Wrestling promotion when he became the Chaotic Wrestling New England Champion on August 8, 2005.
Ciampa appeared on SmackDown on the July 14, 2005, episode. His ring name was Thomas Whitney, ESQ and he was one of Muhammad Hassan’s lawyers and confronted The Undertaker. Ciampa read out a statement from Hassan before being decimated by The Undertaker.
Ciampa wrestled on Velocity and Heat under the ring name Demarco Whitney. In early 2007, Ciampa signed a developmental contract with WWE and was sent to Ohio Valley Wrestling. He wrestled as Tommaso in Ohio Valley Wrestling before getting injured. After the injury, Ciampa portrayed the character of an Anger Management Specialist known as Dr. Thomas. He managed the tag team of Charles Evans and Justin LaRouche.
Ciampa’s final gimmick in his first stint in WWE was that of a masked wrestler with the ring name Prodigy. He was released from his developmental contract on August 9.
After being released from WWE, Ciampa worked on independent promotions before joining Ring of Honor in 2011. He worked over there till 2015 before joining Total Nonstop Action Wrestling in the same year.
Ciampa held a part-time job as a manager of a fitness studio until March 2014. He left the job to focus on his professional wrestling career and it turned out to be a great decision.
Ciampa was announced as part of the 2015 Dusty Rhodes Tag Team Classic tournament. He would team up with Johnny Gargano and it was the start of something special. They didn’t manage to win the tournament as they were eliminated by Baron Corbin and Rhyno. Ciampa hadn’t been signed by the company as yet. However, he had been wrestling singles matches now and then for the company.
On April 2, 2016, it was announced that Ciampa had signed on the dotted lines in favor of WWE. He was allowed to wrestle on independent promotions alongside wrestling on NXT regularly.
Ciampa would continue to impress the WWE higher-ups and finally earned an exclusive contract that barred him from competing in other wrestling promotions.
Ciampa teamed up with Johnny Gargano and they won the NXT Tag Team Championship from The Revival. Gargano and Ciampa were known as #DIY. Their reign was stopped by the Authors of Pain (AOP).
They failed to win back the title on a number of occasions. Ciampa turned on Gargano after being unable to win back the titles in a match against AOP at NXT TakeOver, Chicago.
Ciampa and Gargano went back and forth over the next few weeks and their feud would culminate at NXT TakeOver: Chicago II in a Chicago Street Fight. The Blackheart would go on to win the match.
During his time in NXT, Ciampa won the NXT Championship on a couple of occasions. His first reign lasted 237 days while the second one lasted 112 days.
Tommaso Ciampa failed to win the NXT Championship in a few attempts against both Bron Breakker and Dolph Ziggler in early 2022.
Ciampa’s last match on NXT was on April 2, 2022, at the NXT Stand & Deliver event. He faced Tony D’Angelo and finished with a loss. However, his achievements in NXT were lauded by the fans. On the following episode of NXT, Ciampa delivered a heartfelt promo, thanking the fans for their continued support throughout his 7-year journey on WWE’s developmental territory.
Tommaso Ciampa appeared on the April 11 episode of Raw and was introduced as the newest member of the RAW roster. He turned heel for the first time since 2019 when he attacked Mustafa Ali on the latter’s return to WWE television.
Ciampa tied the knot with former professional wrestler Jessie Ward in September 2013. Samoa Joe was the cupid in the relationship. Ciampa was introduced to Ward by their mutual friend Joe.
