Heinsohn was drafted by the Boston Celtics in the year 1956 as a territorial pick. He was very impressive in the first season itself and was named as the Rookie of the year. Heinsohn also became a NBA All-Star in his first year itself. In the 1956-57 NBA finals, Heinsohn scored 37 points and grabbed 23 rebounds to help his team win the first of many NBA Championships.
After this he went on to be trophy less for one season and then won seven titles in a row from 1959 to 1965. In his 10 years with the Boston Celtics as a player, Heinsohn won the NBA championship eight times. Heinsohn retired in 1965 and to honour his legacy, Boston Celtics decided to retire his jersey number 15.
Just four years after retiring from the NBA with Boston Celtics, Heinsohn returned to the Celtics but as a head coach this time. He was hired by the Celtics as their Head Coach in the 1969-70 season. In the 1972-73 season, Heinsohn was named the coach of the year with a record of 68-14 for that season. However, his team the Celtics did not manage to win the NBA Championships. The very next season Heinsohn got his first title win as a coach. He also led the Celtics to a championship win in 1976. As a coach he had a record of 427-263.
