Beatriz Haddad Maia
The Brazilian tennis pro came into the tournament on the back of a quarter-final run in the Slovenia Open. She defeated Clara Tauson and Cristina Bucsa in straight sets before losing to Ana Bogdan. Maia is enjoying a stellar season having won 2 WTA titles already so far.
In the Toray Pan Pacific Open, the 26-year-old made light work of Japan’s Yuki Naito. Haddad Maia won the match 6-4, 6-2 to set up an interesting second-round meeting with 4-time Grand Slam champion Naomi Osaka. However, the Japanese star pulled out of the tournament due to illness.
