According to Bild (h/t Football.london), Tottenham are keeping an eye on Jerome Boateng and his situation at Bayern. The veteran defender is refusing a new contract and is likely to walk out on a free transfer once his current deal expires at the end of this season. London rivals Arsenal are also said to be interested in the player.
Spurs did some good business in the last transfer window when they signed the likes of Gareth Bale, Sergio Reguilon, Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg and Joe Rodon. However, one area that looks a bit light and in need of quality is the central defence.
Mourinho has used Davinson Sanchez, Toby Alderweireld, Eric Dier and Ben Davies in those two positions. While they have fared decently, they look far from a cohesive unit at the back. Dier and Davies are not natural centre-backs and it is clearly visible. Add to that the departures of Jan Vertonghen and Juan Foyth and you have a very delicate situation.
A player like Boateng would be a good stop-gap solution for Spurs. Yes, Boateng might be on his last legs at the age of 32 but the man is still a quality defender. He was a vital part of Bayern’s treble last season and still looks like he has a few more years in the tank.
With Spurs spending so much on transfers, a budget-friendly option like Boateng wouldn’t be the worst option to go for. He is out of contract at the end of the season and can be signed for a meagre sum in January or for free next summer. This is a deal than can hugely benefit Spurs and they can go for it.
