Tottenham Opinion: Why Spurs must break their bank for Tanguy Ndombele?

According to French newspaper L’Equipe, Tottenham have made the first bid for Lyon’s midfield powerhouse Tanguy Ndombele. (h/t The Metro)

Tanguy Ndombele, 22, is one of the hottest properties in European football right now having impressed with Lyon since joining from Amiens in 2017. The midfielder has shone this season as well, scoring three goals and notching eight assists in all competitions, catching the attention of a host of European clubs including Juventus, PSG, Manchester City and Manchester United.

However, Tottenham have made their first offer for the Frenchman, but Lyon want £88million for their star midfielder. The report claims Lyon are ready to cash in on Tanguy Ndombele this summer and keeping that in mind, Spurs should break their bank and beat their European rivals for the 22-year-old’s signature.

Tottenham boss Mauricio Pochettino has done a fantastic job since arriving in north London. Without signing a single player in the last two transfer windows he has guided Spurs to the Champions League final, which in itself is a special achievement.

Regardless of whatever happens in the Champions League final against Liverpool, if Spurs are to genuinely challenge for the title next season they must add some exciting players in the squad, especially in the middle of the park.

The likes of Harry Winks and Eric Dier have been massively inconsistent, while Dele Alli failed to deliver this past season. Moussa Sissoko has been a revelation in midfield but he has lacked a reliable partner besides him to run the show. With Victor Wanyama struggling with injuries, Pochettino should prioritise strengthening his options in midfield this summer.

The north London outfit should make it a point to bring in a powerful box-to-box midfielder in the summer who can be an asset both in attack and defensively. That being said, Tanguy Ndombele could be the ideal player to take Pochettino’s side into a different level.

Blessed with technique, skill, energy, power and agility, Ndombele would potentially be the ideal replacement for the departed Mousa Dembele. His presence in midfield gave Lyon a brilliant shield for their defence, whilst offering fantastic support to their forwards. The 22-year-old can play in various positions across the midfield, which will give Pochettino a lot of options.

The ex-Amiens man has a bright future ahead of him and under Pochettino he can develop into the best midfielder in the coming years.

Verdict

Tottenham must make a statement by breaking the bank for Ndombele, who will in return bring in everything that Pochettino’s side have lacked since Dembele’s departure. Certainly, signing him would make the north Londoners real contenders for the title in the 2019/20 campaign.
