According to a report from the Daily Mirror, Tottenham are one of the Premier League clubs interested in signing Benfica starlet Gedson Fernandes.
The Portuguese, 20, has broken into Benfica’s first-team this season making 21 league appearances. His performances have caught the attention of a trio of Premier League clubs, with Manchester United and Liverpool also interested alongside Tottenham, claims the Daily Mirror.
Gedson Fernandes is rated at £35m and Tottenham are in a pole position to sign the 20-year-old in the summer, adds the report.
Having failed to sign a single new player for two consecutive transfer windows, Spurs desperately need to do some productive business this summer. Although the north Londoners have performed extremely well on all fronts and have reached the Champions League final as well, they need to bring in some new players to freshen up things and add more depth to their squad.
The Premier League is clearly becoming more competitive, with Manchester City and Liverpool raising the standards this season. If Tottenham ever want to win a league title, then they need new additions.
Mauricio Pochettino needs to first and foremost bring in a replacement for Mousa Dembele, who was sold to a Chinese club in the January transfer window.
Dembele was a star at Spurs and his departure has left a huge void in Pochettino’s midfield. Signing promising youngsters and transforming them into established stars has very much been Pochettino’s way of working at Spurs and he should definitely make a move for Gedson Fernandes.
Fernandes came through the youth ranks of Benfica before finally establishing himself as a first-team player last year. At the tender age of 20, he has also secured two international caps for Portugal having represented his nation at various youth levels.
The youngster is a central midfielder by trade but is versatile enough to play in various positions across the midfield. He has a good range of passing and possesses the ability to pick the right pass in the final third. The Portuguese combines his technique, passing range and work ethic with spatial awareness brilliantly, finding spaces to hurt the opposition.

Blessed with decent pace, Fernandes can make mazy runs from midfield without losing possession. He is also physically strong that helps him win a lot of aerial duels. Also at 20, the two-cap Portugal international has the entire career ahead of him and Pochettino could be the right manager to unlock his true potential.
With funds still tight at Spurs thanks to the billion-pound investment in their new, space-age stadium, Pochettino needs to sell some of his first-team stars before buying players. However, Spurs should not hesitate to strike a deal for the promising young Portuguese midfielder this summer.
