Spurs Opinion: Lilywhites should snap up Max Kruse for free in the summer
According to Sky Sports in Germany, Spurs and Inter Milan have expressed their interest in signing Werder Bremen forward Max Kruse on a free transfer in the summer.
Kruse, 31, is set to be out-of-contract at the end of the season and it is unlikely that he will sign a new contract at Bremen in the final few weeks.
The London Evening Standard reported in 2015 that Mauricio Pochettino wanted to sign Kruse for £9 million, though a move never really materialized.
Signing players above the age of 30 doesn’t comply with Spurs’ transfer policy, but with the Bundesliga veteran set to be available for free at the end of the season, the Lilywhites might be promoted to rethink their stance.
The north Londoners haven’t signed a new player since January 2018 and they are likely to be desperate to do some business in the summer, with a back up for Harry Kane and a replacement for Mousa Dembele in central midfield high on the manager’s wishlist.
Kane and Son Heung-Min have enjoyed another prolific season up front but Spurs need a quality back up for their first-choice striking duo.
Vincent Janssen is likely to complete a move away from north London this summer, having not featured for the Lilywhites for an entire season, while Fernando Llorente is another option that Spurs can certainly do without.
Lucas Moura has been trusted with the responsibility of spearheading the attack in times of crisis, but it is pretty clear that Spurs aren’t going to win any silverware with such little depth in their ranks.
To put things into perspective, Bundesliga veteran Max Kruse can be the ideal man to answer Tottenham’s prayers for a playmaking forward.
A bona-fide goalscorer in German football, the 31-year-old has loads of experience of playing at the highest level and is still very much performing at the peak of his powers.
Kruse has racked up 8 goals and 12 assists from 29 appearances in all competitions for Werder Bremen this season, figures which show that the German international has lost none of his magic.
The veteran has bagged 71 goals and 66 assists from 244 appearances in the Bundesliga over the course of his illustrious career playing for the likes of St.Pauli, Werder Bremen, Borussia Monchengladbach, Freiburg and Wolfsburg.
To add to that, he has 4 goals from 14 senior appearances for Germany and also boasts of Champions League and Europa League experience in his CV.
Primarily a centre-forward by trade, Kruse has earned plaudits for his creativity and goal scoring prowess, being able to drop deep and play in a No.10 role as well.
To go along with his obvious quality, sharpness and trickery on the ball, Kruse is noted for his ability to engineer creativity by playing between the lines in a free role behind the striker, whilst also getting into the box to score goals himself.
He has all the necessary attributes of a perfect playmaking forward – eye for goal, vision and the skill to pick out the right pass, link up with his teammates and open up the half spaces with his wonderful tactical understanding of the game.
Kruse is a tactical genius in the final third and he still has a lot to offer at the highest level even at the age of 31. The German won’t be a long-term fix but Spurs might have a huge bargain on their hands if they manage to secure his services on a free transfer in the summer.

He certainly has the experience and the winning-mentality to propel the Lilywhites to greater heights next term, and that said, the north Londoners should go all out in their pursuit of the Bundesliga veteran.
