Why Tottenham signing Erling Haaland would be a massive statement of intent
According to TuttoMercatoWeb (h/t The Daily Star), Tottenham are linked with a summer move for Borussia Dortmund striker Erling Braut Haaland.
Erling Braut Haaland, 19, has enjoyed a sensational season for both Red Bull Salzburg and Borussia Dortmund. He netted 16 goals in 14 league games for Salzburg before the turn of the year. The Norwegian, who was born in England, only arrived in the Bundesliga in January and has continued his prolific form for Dortmund.
The teenage striker has netted 12 times in just 11 appearances for the Bundesliga outfit, meaning tally for the season now stands at an impressive 40 goals from 33 matches. Haaland has shown he has no problem tearing defences at any level apart and the fact that he’s scored 10 goals in Champions League games speak volumes of his quality and potential.
Meanwhile, Tottenham desperately need to spend big in the summer after being eliminated from both the FA Cup and Champions League. Before the Premier League was suspended until April 30, they struggled in the league as well and were winless in their last three outings.
Jose Mourinho’s side are currently 8th in the table and more than likely to miss out on Champions League football next season.
Spurs have struggled for goals and looked disjointed going forward, especially after losing Harry Kane and Son Heung-min to injuries. They were interested in signing a centre-forward in January, but failed to do so. Instead, they signed a wide forward in Steven Bergwijn, who has unfortunately been ruled out for the remainder of the campaign.
Truly, Tottenham’s season has been hit severely with injuries to key players, leaving the manager to work with a depleted squad. Now, the North London club are understood to be in for a new centre-forward this summer. (h/t The Daily Star)
With the likes of Lucas Moura and Dele Alli failing to deliver the goods as a false nine and Tottenham having very little in their squad at centre-forward beyond injured star Kane, signing Haaland would be the right move.
Haaland has been one of the breakout stars of world football this season. He was sensational in the months leading up to his switch to Dortmund. The Leeds-born star has been scoring goals left, right and centre and is unsurprisingly on the radar of Spurs.

The 19-year-old is a star in the making and would be ideal to cover and compete with Kane. Haaland has incredible potential to develop further and Tottenham manager Jose Mourinho should do everything in his powers to sign him from Dortmund. All in all, to have both Haaland and Kane in the squad could be a devastating prospect to face for all of the sides in the Premier League and in Europe.
Verdict
Landing the Norwegian striker this summer will be a massive statement of intent given his quality and huge potential.
