Tottenham should hold on to Son amidst interest from Bayern Munich
According to The Sun, Tottenham Hotspur winger Heung-min Son has emerged as a transfer target for German club Bayern Munich. The Bundesliga giants are looking to sign a long-term successor to replace ageing wingers Arjen Robben and Franck Ribery and the Korean’s impressive performances have attracted their attention (h/t The Sun).
The 26-year-old moved to White Hart Lane for a fee of £22m from German club Bayer Leverkusen in the summer of 2015. Although he took time to adjust to the demanding nature of the Premier League, Son played an important role in the subsequent seasons for Tottenham Hotspur. Till date, he has scored 47 goals in 140 appearances for the club across all competitions.
Spurs missed the South Korean in the first four games of the season as Son was away on international duty in the Asian Games. Son captained South Korea to a gold medal which exempted him from compulsory military services for the nation. He did come on as a substitute in the last game as Spurs went down 2-1 to Liverpool at home.
Son has established himself as a key player in Spurs’ starting line-up and Mauricio Pochettino has utilized his versatility. The manager has often used him either as a supporting striker behind Harry Kane or as a winger to build play from the wide areas.
He is a versatile attacker and can use both feet equally well. Furthermore, his willingness to play in numerous positions in the attacking half makes him a valuable asset for Tottenham. His explosive pace and positional sense are his greatest strengths but can also find and win spaces to exploit.
The Lilywhites made a good start to their Premier League campaign and were flying high after three back-to-back wins, including a 3-0 whitewash of Manchester United away from home. However, consecutive defeats at the hands of Watford and Liverpool seem to have taken the wind out of their sails.
Although they are not outright contenders to win the Premier League, Spurs have done well in the recent past and they should look to carry that reputation to the Champions League as well. Granted, they did not fare well against Inter Milan but the stage is set for the Londoners to come back stronger.
To put things into perspective, Son holds the key to Tottenham’s attack alongside Lucas Moura and Harry Kane. The midfield hasn’t clicked in the last two games, leaving Kane to feed on scraps. Moura has been their standout performer so far, with three goals to his name.
But with Son in the mix, he should add cutting-edge to Pochettino’s attack. His presence could extract the best out of Kane, as the centre-forward will receive adequate supply. Being a clinical finisher himself, the South Korean must help the team achieve a better scoring record.
Hence, Spurs should hold on to Son amidst interest from Bayern as he will be the key to their success on all fronts.
