According to the Guardian, PSV Eindhoven’s star Hirving Lozano has attracted the attention of Tottenham Hotspur and the Londoners will be keeping a close eye on him when they take on the Dutch outfit in the group stages of the Champions League.
PSV have slapped a £25million price tag on the speedy Mexican winger, meaning Spurs would have to pay over the odds to bag his signature.
The 23-year-old started his professional career with Mexican club Pachuca, where he won the 2016/17 CONCACAF Champions League and made his move to the Eredivisie in 2017. He helped PSV win the league title and went on to score 17 goals in the league last season. The Mexican has made a total of 47 appearances for his current club, finding the back of the net on 28 occasions.
He has kicked off from where he left last season, having already scored 7 goals from his first 8 appearances in the Eredivisie this term.
After a stellar season in the Dutch Eredivisie, his stocks soared even higher after his wonderful goal against Germany in the World Cup in Russia as Mexico went on to beat the defending champions 1-0.
The Mexican has been linked to a host of other Premier League clubs including Manchester United (h/t Manchester Evening News), meaning Spurs will face stiff competition.
Spurs have done reasonably well in the Premier League so far and Pochettino’s men are currently 5th in the standings, just behind Arsenal on goal difference. Despite winning six out of their eight games, the Lilywhites cannot be considered serious title contenders due to the lack of depth in their squad.
Pochettino did not sign any players in the summer but the defeats against Liverpool, Barcelona and Inter Milan should make him reconsider his decision. Spurs were unable to cover for the injuries of Dele Alli, Christian Eriksen, Mousa Dembele and Jan Vertonghen and their reserves had absolutely no answer to Barcelona’s brilliance as the Lilywhites suffered a 4-2 defeat.
Much of the goalscoring workload has been shouldered by the talismanic Harry Kane. Lucas Moura showed a lot of promise in the first few games and scored a brace against Manchester United but the Brazilian seems to have faded. Although he is one of the best dribblers around, he lacks dynamism and has been at the receiving end of a lot of criticism for his inconsistent performances.
Heung-min Son is another tireless worker with the ball but often lacks the desired end product. Hence, Spurs need an attacker who can change the game with a moment of magic and Hirving Lozano should be the ideal choice.
A classic inverted winger by trade, Lozano has the ability to play on the left of either a 4-3-3 or a 4-2-3-1 formation, allowing him to cut inside with his stronger right foot. To go with his sound technique, incredible pace, instant acceleration and silky dribbling skills, the Mexican has the ability to fire powerful and accurate shots on goal from the edge of the box. The 23-year-old is also a decent crosser and can link the play with short passes around the penalty area.
He has an amazing goalscoring record for a winger and Spurs should be aware of that. Furthermore, he is a livewire with the energy and intensity to inject life into the game after coming off the bench and could be a potent threat from counter-attacks with his pace.
Hence, Spurs should not hesitate to splash the cash to sign this dynamic youngster as he is likely to bolster their attacking options to a great extent.
