Tottenham Opinion: Why Ryan Sessegnon would be a top signing for Spurs

According to a report from the Guardian, Ryan Sessegnon is not willing to sign a new contract with Fulham as he wants to join Tottenham this summer.

Sessegnon, 19, is one of the most sought-after young players in the country despite suffering relegation with the Cottagers last season. He made 35 appearances in the Premier League last season, scoring two goals and chipping in with another six assists as the West Londoners finished 19th in the table.

Tottenham aren’t the only club interested in the England youth international. Paris Saint-Germain and Manchester United are also said to be keen on Sessegnon, who Fulham want to keep hold of but will be powerless to retain his services if he decides to leave Craven Cottage.

The report claims Fulham value the teenage sensation at £45m and Sessegnon’s preference is to join Mauricio Pochettino’s forces, Tottenham must splash the cash to end their barren run of signings.

Spurs have released six players, with veteran goalkeeper Michel Vorm among those as Pochettino plans a summer shake-up. Their last signing was Lucas Moura in January 2018 and regardless of no player joining last summer and in January, Pochettino guided his side to the Champions League final, only to lose against Liverpool.

If the North London club are to really challenge for title and silverwares, Pochettino has to bring in some top quality players. And signing a player of Sessegnon’s quality and potential would be a step in the right direction.

Sessegnon failed to keep Fulham in the Premier League, but he still remains one of the hottest young prospects in England. During the 2017-18 campaign, the teenager was the catalyst in Fulham’s promotion to the top-flight as he scored 16 goals and supplied eight assists in 49 games.

The 19-year-old has plenty of pace to burn, energy, agility, crossing abilities and willingness to work tirelessly throughout the game. An excellent dribbler, his plays and movement down the flanks is very difficult to defend. Sessegnon can also play at left-back, but it’s the role on the left that suits him the most as it gives him the freedom and confidence to express himself to the fullest.

The fact that Tottenham made no addition to the side last season didn’t help their cause as injuries and lack of squad depth derailed their promising start. The addition of Sessegnon would go a long way in ensuring that they challenge for the title again next season.

Verdict

Sessegnon should be a perfect fit for Pochettino’s philosophy and he is, indeed, a sublime talent tailor-made for the Premier League. All in all, the Spurs manager could be the right man to take the teenager’s game to the next level and turn him into a Premier League superstar.
