Tottenham Opinion: Why Spurs should make a move for Steven Nzonzi?
Back in January, Italian news outlet Calciomercato claimed that Tottenham were interested in AS Roma midfielder Steven Nzonzi, but a move failed to materialise.
Steven Nzonzi, 30, joined AS Roma from Sevilla last summer, shortly after he won the World Cup with France. He had a solid debut season with Roma, managing 39 appearances across all competitions. However, the Serie A side have failed to qualify for the Champions League following a disastrous campaign that saw them finish sixth in the table.
That being said, Tottenham must reignite their interest and swoop for Steven Nzonzi this summer.
A big summer awaits for Spurs, who will be well aware that their up and coming transfer business will play a huge role in what happens when the first ball is kicked for the 2019/20 Premier League campaign.
Mauricio Pochettino’s side, who concluded the recent Premier League campaign by finishing in the top four and then reaching the Champions League final, need to add new players to their squad in order to compete on all fronts next term.
Heavy investment is needed this time around after Spurs failed to make any signings in the past two transfer windows. Pochettino must seek midfield reinforcements following the exit of Mousa Dembele in January and injury concerns for Victor Wanyama and Eric Dier. Moussa Sissoko was the consistent presence in the middle of park last season but Spurs need a defensive midfielder to partner him next season.
Sissoko has the ability to drive forward with the ball and is expected to be a mainstay in Pochettino’s XI next term. The Frenchman adds a lot of energy and steel to the engine room and is also good at pressing, but a combative presence is needed, like Nzonzi.
Nzonzi is a commanding presence in midfield. He is strong aerially, excellent at winning back possession and composed on the ball. He protects the back-line very well and allows the creative players to freely pass and move around. The 30-year-old works really hard for his team and has the ability and technique to seldom drive through the middle of the park.

Standing at 6ft 5in, the World Cup winner would also prove to be a huge asset to Spurs from both defensive and offensive set-pieces. Furthermore, Nzonzi already has solid experience of playing in England and that should help him easily adapt to Pochettino’s system at Spurs.
Verdict
If Tottenham do end up signing Nzonzi, he will surely prove to be a wonderful acquisition for the north London outfit. He could turn out to be the key signing that helps Pochettino’s side propel to the title.
