Spurs have been handed a huge boost in their pursuit of Turkish international winger Cengiz Under, with recent reports from Italian source Calciomercato claiming that AS Roma could allow the 22-year-old to leave in the summer.
The report from Calciomercato further adds that Roma would demand a fee in the region of €40million to part ways with the Turkish prodigy in the summer.
Under was one of the most sought-after young talents in Europe prior to the January transfer window, with a number of top clubs across the continent expressing their interest in the Turk. However, his progress has somewhat stalled since January, with the 22-year-old failing to start a single Serie A game for the Giallorossi.
That, however, hasn’t affected his valuation in the transfer window, as Roma are still looking to get a sizeable fee should the potential suitors come calling once again in the summer.
Under, who made his move to Roma from Turkish giants Istanbul Basaksehir in 2017, has chipped in with 6 goals and 7 assists for the club in all competitions this season. Those returns are good enough for a 22-year-old, though it has to be said that he could have bagged more goals and assists had injury not played a big part since the turn of the year.
Under, though, is likely to be a man in demand once again this summer, and with Roma leaving the door open to offers, interest in the 22-year-old might reach sky-high come the end of the season.
Back in February, Calciomercato reported that Arsenal and Spurs were interested in securing the Turk’s services in the summer, and recent reports claiming that Roma would be happy to let Under leave at the end of the season should put the north London giants on red alert once again.
To put things into perspective, Spurs’ interest in Cengiz Under has apparently cooled down but the Lilywhites would do themselves a world of good by revisiting their interest in the 22-year-old Serie A ace.
Under, who has 4 goals from 17 senior international appearances for Turkey, is undoubtedly an immensely talented player with loads of potential and a move to the Premier League should help him take his career to the next level.
Having failed to sign a new player in two successive transfer windows, Spurs are in dire need of bolstering their ranks in the summer.
The Lilywhites have relied heavily on Mauricio Pochettino’s charisma and acumen to get the best out of the existing set of players at the club but one can get the feeling that Spurs need to add more depth and quality to their squad if they are to post a better challenge for the Premier League title next season.
Essentially a left-footed inverted winger down the right, Under boasts of lightning pace and quick feet, which allows him to rip the opposition apart and cut inside from the flanks to create chances.
Blessed with plenty of flair and quality on the ball, Under excels with his ability to change directions quickly and dribble at pace, while also possessing the shooting ability to test the goalkeeper from range.
The likes of Lucas Moura, Son-Heung Min, Harry Kane, Dele Alli and Christian Eriksen have all played their roles but someone like Under would add that youthful exuberance, cutting-edge and X-factor to Spurs’ attack.
Fringe players like Georges-Kevin Nkoudou and Vincent Janssen are likely to depart, while the club also need to make a decision on the future of Erik Lamela.
