Tottenham Opinion: Why Spurs must reignite their interest in Patrik Schick?

Back in January, Italian news outlet Sport Mediaset claimed Tottenham Hotspur made an attempt to sign forward Patrik Schick, but AS Roma were reluctant to sell him.

The Czech Republic international, 23, was snapped up from Sampdoria in the summer of 2017 by AS Roma. He hasn’t got going at the Stadio Olimpica despite playing more than 50 times for the La Magica. The 23-year-old has bagged only five goals and three assists in 31 appearances across all competitions this season.

Despite failing to hit the heights expected in Rome, Tottenham must reignite their interest in Patrik Schick and sign him this summer.

Tottenham have struggled in their attempts to secure a competitive forward for Harry Kane in the past, with Vincent Janssen struggling to impose himself in north London and Fernando Llorente set to leave the club.

Llorente has done exceptionally well in Kane’s absence, though. The big Spaniard has made a telling impact when being involved this season, most notably scoring the crucial winner against Manchester City in the second leg of the Champions League quarter-finals.

But the Daily Mail claim he is not in Tottenham’s plans going forward and the club are willing to let him leave on a free transfer. By offloading Llorente from the books, Pochettino is set to hunt for Kane’s back-up in the summer transfer window.

Kane has spent lengthy periods on the sidelines in the last two campaigns due to ankle issues and while Son Heung-min has impressed when called upon, another forward is crucially needed at Spurs.

Spurs cannot simply afford to throw an untested player onto the pitch and hope for miracles once Llorente leaves. That being said, Patrik Schick could be that player for Tottenham. The Czech Republic forward represents the right combination of potential and experience for Pochettino’s side.

The fact that the 23-year-old is already a household name in Italy and has 16 international caps, bodes well for the North Londoners. Schick, however, has endured a torrid time at Roma and is yet to live up to the expectations of the fans. Regardless of that, he still has enough time to reignite his career, which should appeal to Spurs.

Plus, his versatility combined with his natural athleticism, technical qualities, physicality, pace and industry makes him an attainable target.

Verdict

Finding an able deputy to Kane has been quite a challenge for Tottenham during the past several years. If Spurs can lure Schick away from Roma this summer those concerns could become a thing of the past.
