Tottenham Opinion: Why Spurs should make a move for Wissam Ben Yedder

Tottenham have been trying to win the Premier League for the last couple of seasons but have seemingly come up short every time. Mauricio Pochettino has a very strong, exciting starting XI that can beat any team on their day, but when a few players become unavailable due to injury or suspensions, the north Londoners struggle.

Spurs have tried and failed to provide a suitable back-up striker to Harry Kane for a number of years now. Vincent Janssen has failed to cut it in the Premier League and while Fernando Llorente delivered the goods in the England international’s absence, the Spaniard is 34 and will leave the club on a free transfer after the Champions League final.

The summer transfer window is the perfect opportunity for Pochettino to bring in an ideal deputy for his talismanic striker, Harry Kane. The Englishman is arguably the world’s finest no.9, but he does need somebody to share the goalscoring burden from next season. That being said, Tottenham should target Sevilla star Wissam Ben Yedder.

Spurs were linked to Wissam Ben Yedder back in 2016. Perhaps, now is the right time for the north London club to reignite their interest in the forward and sign him up.

Ben Yedder, 28, enjoyed an incredible season with Sevilla as he bagged 30 goals and 11 assists across all competitions. Out of his 30 goals, 18 came in 35 La Liga appearances, which is almost a goal in two games. Last season, he managed 22 goals across all competitions which just tells how prolific the Frenchman has been for Sevilla and why he could be the ideal back-up to Kane.

Comfortable on either foot, the 28-year-old possesses excellent technical ability and dribbling skills which keep defenders on their toes. Ben Yedder loves to make runs in behind the defenders, whilst his burst of pace and agility will give Spurs a different threat to Kane. He is deadly inside the box and can be also deployed as a second striker when required.

The ex-Toulouse star might finally be the perfect solution to support Kane and even push for a starting berth alongside the England international. He is operating at the peak of his career, with the Frenchman turning 29 in August. Moreover, Ben Yedder would provide Pochettino with an entirely different option in the final third.

Verdict

A deal for Ben Yedder would not be cheap now, considering his 30-goal exploit for Sevilla. But based on his performances at Ramon Sanchez-Pizjuan Stadium over the last two seasons, Spurs should test the La Liga club’s resolve with a staggering bid.
