Tottenham Opinion: Why Spurs should revive their interest in Tonny Vilhena

Back in December 2018, the Calciomercato claimed that Tottenham were interested in Feyenoord midfielder Tonny Vilhena. However, a deal didn’t materialise in the January transfer window.

The Dutchman, 24, came through the ranks of Feyenoord’s youth system before being promoted to their first team in 2012. He enjoyed a prolific 2017/18 Eredivisie campaign, scoring 11 goals and registering four assists.

Vilhena had a good last season in the Eredivisie, although his productivity reduced a bit. He managed six goals and seven assists in 33 games for Feyenoord, who finished third in the table and qualified for the Champions League next term.

Keeping his consistent performances over the last two seasons in mind, Tottenham should reignite their interest in Tonny Vilhena.

Spurs didn’t spend a single penny in the last two transfer windows predominantly due to the rebuild of their stadium. Thus, it is reasonable as to why Mauricio Pochettino’s squad gets stretched every time there are any injury concerns in any area of the pitch. As of now, they look a bit short of options in central midfield.

Letting go of Mousa Dembele in the January transfer window without signing a proper replacement was one of the worst decisions Pochettino has taken since arriving in North London. So, signing a replacement for the departed Dembele has to be a priority for Pochettino, whose side finished as the runners-up in the Champions League final earlier this month.

Moussa Sissoko and Harry Winks need competition and cover in central midfield, as the likes of Victor Wanyama and Eric Dier endured an injury-hit campaign this past season. Hence, it’s important to sign a central midfielder and Vilhena would be an ideal option for Tottenham.

Vilhena is a versatile midfielder, who is comfortable playing in various positions across the middle of the park. The Dutchman is a fantastic passer of the ball and he doesn’t shy away from carrying the ball out from the midfield into the opposition’s third to create a goal-scoring opportunity. He is also a threat from long-range and is quite productive when it comes to creating chances.

The 24-year-old is blessed with quick feet, which enables him to drift past defenders. He would provide further creativity in the middle of the park for Tottenham, whilst giving Pochettino with more tactical flexibility in the engine room. Also, Vilhena is combative and never hesitates to fly into tackles and challenges to disrupt the opposition’s attacks.

Verdict

And at the age of 24, Vilhena could be a smart long-term investment for Tottenham, whilst being a perfect replacement for Dembele.
