Tottenham Opinion: Why Spurs should make a move for Abdoulaye Doucoure

Back in November 2018, the Daily Mirror claimed that Tottenham were interested in signing Watford’s midfield enforcer Abdoulaye Doucoure. However, a move didn’t materialise in the January transfer window and the Frenchman stayed with Watford.

Abdoulaye Doucoure, 26, enjoyed a brilliant last campaign at Vicarage Road. The 26-year-old bagged five goals and six assists in 35 league appearances from central midfield. In the 2017/18 campaign, he scored seven goals in what was undoubtedly the campaign that proved that he could probably play for any top six side in the Premier League.

Keeping in mind the Frenchman’s performances for the Hornets over the last couple of seasons, Tottenham must reignite their interest in Doucoure.

Spurs are expected to spend big in the summer transfer window to help manager Mauricio Pochettino mount a significant title challenge next season. Pochettino’s side have stumbled at crucial junctures in the last few campaigns, apparently failing to realistically challenge for the Premier League.

The Argentinean tactician has a solid starting XI, but there is a lack of depth in his squad. And one of the areas that looks a bit thin is the midfield following Mousa Dembele’s departure to China in January. Victor Wanyama barely featured for Spurs last season, and Eric Dier’s form of late has been criticised.

Moussa Sissoko was the only consistent performer in the middle of the park and while Harry Winks has the ability to recycle possession, Pochettino needs a more dynamic player to partner Sissoko in midfield from next season. Signing Doucoure, therefore, would make complete sense.

Doucoure has made no secret of his desire to play in the Champions League and Spurs can tempt the midfielder into joining them. A box-to-box player, he is also strong from a defensive standpoint, capable of breaking play with his tackling and interception skills. The Frenchman has immensely strong and athletic, whilst possessing the quality on the ball to pick out passes for the attacking players.

The ex-Rennes star brings a lot of energy and tenacity to the team, and his ability to get on the ball and drive his team forward makes him such a strong player to have for any team. Blessed with great stamina, Doucoure works extremely hard and holds things together for his team in the midfield, while contributing equally to both attack and defence.

The 26-year-old is more than capable of making an impression in the attacking third with his eye for key passes and through balls. That, coupled with his ability to score goals, makes the former France youth international a wonderful all-around player for any team.

Verdict

Doucoure has starred for Watford over the last 18 months, becoming one of the Premier League’s top midfielders. His addition would not only potentially bolster Spurs’ quality in midfield but also improve the depth in Pochettino’s squad.

Thus, Spurs must not hesitate to break their bank for the signature of Doucoure.
