Why Tottenham should beat Leicester City to sign Callum McGregor?
According to a report from the Metro, new Leicester City manager Brendan Rodgers is interested in signing Celtic star Callum McGregor in the summer.
Callum McGregor, 25, has played a key role for Celtic this season with six goals and 10 assists across all competitions. The Scotsman, who signed a new five-year deal at the Parkhead in December, is valued at £15m, adds the report.
That said, Tottenham Hotspur should rival Leicester City in the summer for McGregor’s signature.
Tottenham progressed to the Champions League quarterfinals for the first time since 2011 after sealing a comprehensive 4-0 aggregate victory over Bundesliga leaders Borussia Dortmund with their 1-0 win at the Signal Iduna Park on Tuesday.
The victory and qualification to the Champions League next round was a much-needed one for Mauricio Pochettino after his team endured a torrid last couple of weeks. Defeats at Burnley and Chelsea all but extinguished Tottenham’s title hopes for another season and although they bagged a very good point in the north London derby, the truth is the squad isn’t quite ready to mount a significant title challenge.
Credit to Pochettino for challenging Manchester City and Liverpool for the title until the last month but after failing to invest a single penny in the past two transfer windows, it’s high time Spurs show their ambition this summer.
A central midfielder should be made a priority following Moussa Dembele’s sale to China in January. A player with box-to-box movements and capable of dictating the tempo of the game is the necessity at Spurs and Pochettino would be wise to make a move for Callum McGregor.
The 25-year-old has impressed with his creativity, immaculate passing, tireless running and goalscoring ability in what has been another wonderful season for the Hoops. McGregor has been an absolute livewire in the midfield and in the final third, dictating the rhythm of the game with his passing range, movement and link-up play.
McGregor, a versatile player, can operate in central midfield, left and right wing, as a no.10 or even at left-back. The Scottish international is quick, agile and possesses the burst of pace which helps him change directions quickly and beat his marker. He is a very clever midfielder who knows to exploit little spaces between two defenders with his creativity and vision.
Tottenham have floundered in the crucial stages of the season for the last few years. Hence, it is now time for Pochettino to take the next big step and start winning trophies in north London. He has already built a solid squad but there are a few areas which still need strengthening to achieve the club’s long-term objectives.
And signing a versatile, classy midfielder like McGregor will be a step in the right direction. That said, Spurs should go all out to sign the Scotsman from Celtic.
