Why Tottenham must make a move for Wolfsburg striker Wout Weghorst

In January, the Bild (h/t The Express) had claimed that Tottenham considered signing Wolfsburg striker Wout Weghorst. However, no deal happened during the January transfer window and the striker stayed put at the Bundesliga club.

Wout Weghorst, 27, has scored 10 goals in 21 Bundesliga games so far this campaign. He went seven games without a goal but ended that run in stunning fashion on Saturday, as the Dutchman smashed a hat-trick to help Wolfsburg beat Hoffenheim 3-2 away from home. He netted two penalties before dinking home the winner to give Die Wolfe all three points.

Meanwhile, Tottenham’s dramatic 3-2 victory over Aston Villa have propelled them up the league table and they are in with a real shout of Champions League qualification, which wasn’t the case when Mauricio Pochettino was sacked. They may have struggled to find their rhythm in recent weeks under Jose Mourinho but have managed to grind out victories.

Spurs have been without a natural striker since Harry Kane sustained a hamstring injury in the 1-0 defeat to Southampton at St. Mary’s Stadium. In Kane’s absence, Mourinho has used Lucas Moura and Son Heung-min in the No.9 role but none of them has managed to impress.

Spurs did manage to sign Steven Bergwijn and Gedson Fernandes in January but they failed to bring in a replacement for the injured Kane. Therefore, the Spurs boss must pursue Weghorst in the summer to strengthen his options up front.

Weghorst is a natural centre-forward who has been a trusted goalscorer for Wolfsburg since arriving from AZ Alkmaar in 2018. He netted 17 Bundesliga goals in his debut season at Volkswagen Arena in 34 appearances. The 27-year-old’s productivity may have dipped this term, but he has netted 10 league goals and 14 across all competitions.

Prior to his move to the Bundesliga, the three-cap Netherlands international netted 45 goals in 86 appearances for AZ Alkmaar, which is truly a fantastic record. At the age of 27, Weghorst is operating at the peak of his powers and would be a valuable addition to the Tottenham squad. He would be a viable option for Tottenham as far as their depth is concerned.

Verdict

Therefore, Spurs must make another attempt to sign Weghorst and lure him to England when the summer transfer window opens.
