Tottenham Opinion: Why Spurs should make a move for Donny van de Beek

According to a report from Calciomercato, Tottenham are interested in a summer swoop for Ajax star Donny van de Beek.

The Dutchman, 21, starred in Ajax’s victory over Real Madrid in the Champions League quarter-finals last month, showing his class with and without the ball. Overall, he has been in excellent form this season, scoring six goals and assisting seven in 26 Eredivisie games.

The report claims Tottenham are willing to spend in the summer after not signing a single player in the past two transfer windows and want to invest heavily in bolstering the midfield.

And it makes complete sense for the north Londoners to prioritise reshaping the midfield after the January departure of powerhouse Mousa Dembele.

Spurs sold Dembele to Chinese Super League side Guangzhou R&F in the January transfer window as his contract was set to expire in the summer. But Mauricio Pochettino didn’t bring in a replacement throughout the winter transfer window, meaning they have now failed to sign a single player since Lucas Moura joined the club in January 2018.

But after how things have panned out so far this season, it’s clear the club is in need of new recruits if they are to mount a title challenge in the 2019/20 campaign. At 21, Donny van de Beek has been making waves in the Eredivisie and has the qualities to thrive in the Premier League.

An attacking midfielder by trade, the Dutchman is also adept playing in central midfield or as a wide midfielder as per the requirement of the game.
