Why Tottenham should make a move for Real Madrid striker Luka Jovic

According to a report by Spanish outlet El Desmarque (h/t Football.London), Tottenham have made an enquiry about Real Madrid striker Luka Jovic.

Luka Jovic, 22, has struggled since moving to Santiago Bernabeu from Eintracht Frankfurt for a fee of €60m. He has started only four league games this season, failing to nail down a regular starting berth in manager Zinedine Zidane’s team.

The report adds (h/t Football London) that the Serbian is open to leaving Real Madrid after failing to impress Zidane in the first six months of the La Liga season.

Tottenham have signed Gedson Fernandes on an 18-month loan deal from Benfica, which stands as their only acquisition of the January transfer window. They are six points behind fourth-placed Chelsea after a difficult start to the season and without a natural striker following Harry Kane’s injury.

The England skipper’s injury has left a significant void in the starting line-up which needs to be filled before the ongoing transfer window closes. Jose Mourinho has used the likes of Lucas Moura and Son Heung-min upfront but they are more effective when operating down the flanks as wide attackers.

Given that Tottenham are currently lacking a natural striker in their ranks, Mourinho should go for Luka Jovic. The Serbian may have struggled to adapt to the demands of La Liga football, scoring only once in 12 appearances for Real Madrid. However, it is worth noting that the 22-year-old scored 27 goals in 46 games for Frankfurt before moving to Madrid.

Following Harry Kane’s injury, Mourinho’s decision to use the likes of Son, Lucas and Dele Alli up front hasn’t been even remotely successful. And that’s why a deal for Jovic makes sense.

Verdict

The Serbian international would add depth to the club’s attack as Kane recuperates. Thus, Tottenham would be wise to lure him to North London in the near future.
