Why Tottenham Hotspur should sign Demarai Gray this summer

According to Football.london, Tottenham Hotspur have begun talks with Leicester City star Demarai Gray over the possibility of a summer transfer.

The report states that Tottenham have been watching the 24-year-old winger for quite some time now and are now intent on bringing him to North London this summer.

Profile

Born in Birmingham, Gray started out at the Cadbury Athletic youth setup before switching to Birmingham City in 2006. Having impressed heavily in the youth ranks, the winger was fast-tracked into the first-team, making his debut in 2013, aged 17. Gray went on to feature 78 times for Birmingham, scoring eight goals and setting up four more. (h/t Transfermarkt)

In January 2016, Leicester City came calling and the Englishman jumped ship and was part of the side that won the Premier League title that season. Till date, he has racked up 167 appearances for the Foxes, finding the back of the net on 13 occasions while registering 17 assists. (h/t Transfermarkt)

Gray has represented the England national teal across all age groups starting from U18s to U21s. He is yet to make his senior debut for the Three Lions, however.

Signing Demarai Gray would add depth to Tottenham

Tottenham endured a poor 2019/20 campaign, although a good run of form towards the end of the season ensured a sixth-place finish in the Premier League. It goes without saying that reinforcements will be needed this summer if Jose Mourinho is to take the team back into the top four.

As things stand, Tottenham have Lucas Moura, Son Heung-min and Steven Bergwijn as the wingers. In addition, Erik Lamela and loanee Gedson Fernandes can also slot out wide on the right flank.

However, apart from Son, and to an extent Bergwijn, none of the wingers were consistent enough this past season. In fact, Lucas went without scoring a goal since December last year. So adding more firepower on the flanks would be a good move by the North London outfit.

To that end, Gray would be a viable option for Mourinho to look at. The 24-year-old did not play a lot in the season gone by but made a solid impression each time he took the field. The Englishman ended the 2019/20 season with three goals and five assists in 29 matches in all competitions, averaging a goal contribution every 130 minutes.

Signing him would provide Tottenham with an added threat on the wide areas. And given his age, Gray has room for development and can further polish his game under an accomplished manager like Mourinho.

Verdict

Goals had been a problem for Tottenham last season when Harry Kane and Son Heung-min were out injured. So adding another player who can come in and produce the goods in front of goal would be a smart move.

Gray, in that regard, can prove to be a good signing for the Lilywhites. The 24-year-old can play on either flank and can chip in with goals and assists, which would make him a productive option for Spurs.
