Tottenham Opinion: Why Spurs should go all out to sign Matias Vecino?

According to a report from Inter Live, Tottenham are interested in Inter Milan star Matias Vecino.

The Uruguayan, 27, has made 33 appearances for Inter Milan in all competitions this season, scoring four goals. Incidentally, he scored a late winner as Tottenham lost 2-1 at the San Siro in the Champions League group stage earlier this campaign.

The report claims Tottenham will have to pay around £25million if they want to sign Matias Vecino, who has been with Inter since 2017. Should the north Londoners pay that much amount to sign him?

Without any second thoughts, Tottenham should pay it. Mauricio Pochettino’s side are in deep trouble of losing Champions League football, having endured a run of four defeats in last five Premier League games. Although they remain third at the moment, the likes of Manchester United, Arsenal and Chelsea are breathing down their neck.

And Spurs’ failure to sign a single player in the last two transfer windows have come back to haunt Pochettino and company. After spending so much money on rebuilding the stadium, it’ll be a shame if the Lilywhites miss out on Champions League football next season. There’s no other way than winning the last seven games of the season if they are to qualify for Europe’s elite competition.

With our without Champions League football, Tottenham desperately need new faces in the team and Pochettino should prioritise addressing the midfield following Mousa Dembele’s sale to a Chinese club. Allowing Dembele to leave in January without bringing in sufficient cover was one of the biggest Pochettino has done in his time at Tottenham.

But come summer, the club should definitely sign Vecino to shore up the midfield options.

Vecino is a technically-gifted and tactically versatile midfielder who is a very smooth operator and an excellent dribbler as well. That’s what makes him perfect for Tottenham and more importantly, for Pochettino. He is predominantly a box-to-box midfielder but he has played in a variety of positions across the midfield for club and country in the last few years.

The Uruguayan is blessed with an excellent passing range, positional awareness and game-reading skills. He can move the ball around really well and come up with the odd goal for his team. In short, Vecino has everything to flourish in the Premier League.

Verdict

Replacing Dembele will be tough for Pochettino, considering how good and valuable the Belgian was for the club. But adding a player as talented and versatile like Matias Vecino makes it an absolute no-brainer for Spurs.
