According to Calciomercato (h/t Football.london), Tottenham are keeping tabs on the progress of Weston McKennie. The American youngster has impressed this season at Juventus and a number of English clubs are watching him closely. It is being said that Spurs want him as a replacement for Dele Alli.
McKennie, 22, spent time at the academies of Phonix Otterbach and FC Dallas before joining Schalke’s youth system in 2016. After excelling with the German outfit’s U19 side, he was promoted to the club’s senior set-up in the summer of 2017. Since then, he was a regular member of the squad.
Though he couldn’t make an impact initially, the youngster was in sensational form last season and his impressive performances led to a move to Italian giants Juventus. While he is on loan there, Juve can sign him a permanent deal at the end of the season.
The youngster has really come of age this season with his performances at Juve. In 15 appearances he has scored and assisted twice each, including a brilliant scissors kick goal in the Champions League. He is already an experienced member of the USMNT with 19 appearances and 6 goals.
The Sun reported that Spurs are open to Dele Alli leaving the club on a permanent basis. Alli, who was once an indispensable asset under Mauricio Pochettino, has fallen out of favour under Jose Mourinho. He has hardly been given game time and his time at the club looks set to come to an end.
In Italy though, a certain Weston McKennie is making waves with Juventus. Already a regular in Andrea Pirlo’s side, the American is among the many from his nation to make a splash in Europe this season.
Signing McKennie would be a fantastic move by Spurs. The USA ace is in a rich vein of form and has excelled for the Italian outfit this term. He is one of the most talented midfielders in the Serie A and is an excellent box-to-box midfielder.
A dynamic midfielder, McKennie is just 22 and has a lot of room for development. Given the situation of Alli, it is clear that Spurs need to rope in midfielders to bolster their squad. Thus, signing the USA international in the future would be a wise decision by the club.
