As per El Desmarque (h/t Football.london), Tottenham are interested in signing Real Sociedad star Willian Jose this summer.
The report suggests that Tottenham have been long-term admirers of the Brazilian and the La Liga outfit are willing to sell him now. Tottenham boss Jose Mourinho is looking to strengthen his attacking options and the 28-year-old is one of his top targets.
Born in Brazil, Jose came through the ranks of Regatas Brasil’s youth system. He joined Uruguayan side Maldonado in January 2011 but spent most of his career on loan spells. He played for clubs like Sao Paulo, Gremio, Real Madrid Castilla, Real Zaragoza, and Las Palmas before joining Sociedad in the summer of 2016 on a permanent basis.
Since then, he has become an integral member of the squad and has led the team regularly in the last four seasons. He finished as the club’s top-scorer with 11 goals last season and helped them to a seventh-place finish in the La Liga.
He has made 149 appearances for the Spanish outfit to date, racking up 56 goals and 14 assists, and has been consistent and reliable in the last few seasons.
Mourinho’s side got off to a poor start in the new campaign as they lost 1-0 to Everton. Despite making a few signings this summer, one key area where they haven’t strengthened is the centre-forward position. And the manager needs to address the situation as early as possible.
Harry Kane has been the lone striker up front and the English ace has done a marvellous job so far. However, an injury to Kane last season hampered Tottenham’s progress as they fell short of a natural goalscorer.
The Lilywhites failed to bring in replacements for Vincent Janssen and Fernando Llorente last summer and that proved to be costly in Kane’s absence.
In that regard, Jose would be a fantastic addition to the squad. The Brazilian has been consistent for Sociedad in the last few years. He has scored more than 10 goals in each of the last three league campaigns and if he is able to replicate the same form, Tottenham could benefit from his presence.
His inclusion would definitely add depth to the Lilywhites’ attacking ranks, whilst also bringing healthy competition to the squad. He could be a perfect backup for Kane and could reduce the goalscoring burden on the Englishman.
At 28, he still has a few more years left to play at the top level and could be a crucial addition to Mourinho’s squad. And with limited options in their attack, it is clear that some like Jose would bolster their attack. Thus, the Lilywhites should lure the Brazilian to North London this summer.
