Why Tottenham should beat Man United to sign Sergio Reguilon

Sergio Reguilon is a player in demand and AS (h/t Football.london) suggest that Tottenham gaffer Jose Mourinho is interested in the player and that ‘he has phoned him personally’.

The Spaniard has attracted interest from a host of clubs but at this stage, only Manchester United look to be in the race alongside Spurs (source – Express).

Profile

Sergio Reguilon is a 23-year-old Spanish left-back who is currently contracted to Real Madrid. He joined La Fabricia (Real Madrid’s academy) in 2005 from EFM Villalba. Since then, he has been at the academy and has moved up the ranks to get into the Castilla side.

While at Castilla, he was loaned out twice to Logrones in 2015 and 2016. The academy starlet’s hard work finally paid off as he was called up to the first-team in 2018. He defied expectations and made the left-back spot his own by ousting Marcelo.

However, once Zidane returned as manager, Marcelo was restored and Reguilon found it hard to get games. In 2019, he went out on loan to Sevilla as Madrid had brought in Ferland Mendy. At Sevilla, he made the left flank his own as he made 38 appearances, scored 3 goals and 5 assists en route to a Europa League title and a 4th-place finish.

Why is Reguilon to Spurs a great move

Reguilon impressed thoroughly for Sevilla last season and that has led to a lot of speculation regarding his future. Clearly, his path at Madrid is blocked by the emergence of Ferland Mendy. The player himself admitted that he doesn’t know where he will play this season via Radio Marca (h/t Goal.com).

One look at Spurs’ left-back options and Reguilon looks like an instant upgrade on all of them. Danny Rose spent the 2019/20 season out on loan as Ben Davies and Japhet Tanganga competed for the spot.

While Davies has not done anything wrong, it’s just common sense to get a player like Reguilon if he is available on the market.

This is one transfer that might drag on to the final days of the transfer window as Real Madrid look to offer clubs like Manchester United the chance to buy the young left-back.

Spurs need to step up their pursuit as Reguilon is a fantastic left-back with the experience of playing for two big Spanish clubs.
