Why Tottenham signing Gaetano Castrovilli would be a smart long-term investment
According to Football.london, Tottenham have kept an eye on Gaetano Castrovilli. Reports suggest that they have scouted the midfielder for a while now. Teams like RB Leipzig, Napoli and Inter Milan have also shown interest in the player.
Profile
Gaetano Castrovilli is a 23-year-old Italian midfielder who plays for Serie A side Fiorentina. He started his youth career at Minervino in 2006 but moved to Bari’s youth setup after 2 years. After climbing through the ranks at Bari, he was promoted to the senior side in 2017.
Soon he was loaned to Fiorentina’s U-19 side and on completion of the loan, he was signed on a permanent basis. On signing for Fiorentina, he was immediately loaned out to Cremonese on a two-year deal. During that time he made 55 appearances, scoring 6 goals and assisting 8 more (source – Transfermarkt).
On his return, he was slotted into the team and went on to become a vital part. So far, he has made 40 appearances for them, while contributing to 10 goals. The midfielder has played for the Italy youth sides but is yet to receive a call-up to the senior side.
Will he be a good fit for the team?
For the first time in a long while, Spurs look like they have a good squad with able backups in every position. They did some good business bringing in the likes of Gareth Bale, Sergio Reguilon, Matt Doherty, Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg and Carlos Vinicius.
However, an attacking midfielder such as Castrovilli could be of interest to the club. He is capable of playing in a variety of midfield positions and even in the forward line. Having such a utility player can be of great use to Spurs .
Verdict
While Tottenham don’t exactly need players at this point, it would just be good sense to bring in a player who can play in so many positions. It reduces Mourinho’s headache in case there are injuries during this tightly cramped season.

Castrovilli would provide Mourinho with a lot of options in terms of where to use him. He surely looks like a good fit for Spurs and they should look to bring him in January to provide cover.
