According to claims from French outlet Le10 Sport, Spurs are in pole position to land Lyon midfielder Tanguy Ndombele this summer, with PSG and Juventus also believed to be hot on the trail of the 22-year-old central midfielder.
The same source claims that Ndombele has been scouted by several top clubs in Europe over the course of the season, including Premier League giants Man City and Man United, but it looks as if Spurs are leading the race for the highly-rated midfield enforcer.
As per reports from French daily L’Equipe on Friday, Spurs have already tabled a bid for Tanguy Ndombele, who is rated at £87million by his current club Lyon.
Ndombele played for Guingamp and Amiens earlier in his career before joining Lyon on loan from the latter back in the summer of 2017.
He impressed with his raw power, drive and technical attributes in his first season at the club and Lyon triggered the buy option in his loan deal to keep him on a permanent basis.
The 22-year-old hasn’t looked back since then and has progressed by leaps and bounds over the past year and a half, evolving into one of the brightest young prospects in European football.
Ndombele has made a total of 94 appearances for Lyon in all competitions, accumulating 3 goals and 16 assists in the process, returns which speak volumes of his rapid all-around development.
Essentially a central midfielder by trade, Ndombele has the versatility to switch between defensive and box-to-box roles in the middle of the park.
Calm and comfortable in possession and blessed with a wonderful range of passing, the Frenchman not only plays a key role in dictating the tempo of the game in the midfield but he also has the vision, presence of mind and the speed of thought to thread defence-splitting through balls to create goalscoring chances.
A strong, tough-tackling and tenacious midfielder with plenty of drive and determination, Ndombele sets his team on the front foot by winning possession back with crucial tackles and interceptions, while also acting as the link between the midfield and the forward line with his powerful driving runs and intelligent passing.
He not only carries the ball with intent and purpose but he also knows how to use possession to good effect and create chances.
To go with his pace, power, vision and anticipation, Ndombele also has a certain touch of elegance to his game, with his wonderful dribbling skills making him an absolute treat to watch.
He has got very quick feet and wonderful acceleration and he uses his technical abilities on the ball to create his own space in the midfield.
To put things into perspective, Tanguy Ndombele is a player with a mountain of potential and a move to the Premier League would be the next big step in his career.
Spurs haven’t signed a single new player for two consecutive transfer windows but manager Mauricio Pochettino is likely to have funds at his disposal this summer, although the Lilywhites would need to shatter their record fee to meet Lyon’s valuation of the player.
However, if Spurs do manage to sign Ndombele, it would be a massive coup for them and a perfect start to the summer, as they look to build a squad capable of challenging Man City and Liverpool for the Premier League title.
The Lilywhites have had plenty of issues relating to squad depth this season, with several of their first-team stars spending time on the sidelines due to injuries, and they need to sort that out this summer.
Mousa Dembele’s departure in January has dealt a huge blow to Spurs as far as their central midfield options are concerned. Victor Wanyama has lost his sharpness and work-rate due to recurrent injuries and his future in north London is far from settled. Eric Dier has also been unavailable repeatedly due to health issues and he hasn’t been at his best this season.
Harry Winks looked pretty impressive before being sidelined with an injury, while Oliver Skipp is still very young to play regularly at the highest level.
Moussa Sissoko is one player who has impressed greatly with his tireless running and tough-tackling nature in central midfield but Spurs clearly need an upgrade on their other options if they are to compete at the highest level.

Suffice to say, Spurs should be desperate to get their hands on the talented Frenchman this summer even if it means that they would possibly have to fork out a massive amount to do so. He has everything in his locker that could possibly transform the Lilywhites into realistic title-contenders.
