Tottenham Opinion: Why Spurs should avoid signing Ivan Perisic from Inter?

According to a report from Tuttomercatoweb, Tottenham have been linked with a move for Inter Milan’s Ivan Perisic and are prepared to offer €25m for the Croatian international. However, the report adds Inter are demanding €35m for the player, who has endured an underwhelming season in the Serie A.

Ivan Perisic, 30, starred for Croatia in the World Cup last summer as they went all the way to the final in Moscow, only to lose 4-2 to France.

After a stunning World Cup campaign, the winger was expected to come good for Inter but he has failed to live up to the expectations of the fans, managing just four goals and three assists in 24 games.

Given his productivity for the Serie A giants this season, Tottenham shouldn’t go for Perisic in the summer.

Tottenham didn’t sign a single player in the past two transfer windows — a move which has come back to haunt the club of late, with the north Londoners falling out of the title race as well as exiting the FA Cup.

The Champions League is their only chance to win a trophy this season but Mauricio Pochettino’s men face Manchester City in the quarter-finals of the competition.

A place in the top four is important for Pochettino and co. as Spurs have invested heavily in building the new stadium.

Also, reinforcements are desperately needed if Tottenham are to retain their place amongst England’s elite clubs. As far as interest in Ivan Perisic goes, Pochettino doesn’t exactly need a player like him. In fact, it is quite bizarre as to why Spurs would spend on a winger when they already have so many attacking players in the squad.

In Harry Kane, Christian Eriksen, Dele Alli, Son Heung-min, Lucas Moura and Erik Lamela, Tottenham have one of the most exciting attacking units in the Premier League. That begs the question why would the north London club need Perisic’s services?

Well, with all due respect to the Croatian’s qualities and experience, it is easy to say that Pochettino can only accommodate him by offloading either one of his aforementioned players, which outwardly would not make sense. Plus, Perisic is 30 and will have very little re-sale value if he flops at Tottenham.

Verdict

Hence, Pochettino shouldn’t splash £35 million for Perisic this summer. Instead, he should target a back-up striker and a central midfielder to reinforce his squad ahead of the 2019/20 campaign.
