Why Tottenham would be wise to replace Pochettino with Jose Mourinho
According to a report by The Sun, Jose Mourinho has expressed a desire to become Tottenham Hotspur’s next manager – provided Mauricio Pochettino gets sacked.
The Argentine boss is currently under pressure after dropping to a lowly 14th in the standings. The north Londoners look like a shadow of their former selves, especially after reaching the Champions League final last season without signing any new players.
Pochettino is undoubtedly one of the best things to have happened to Tottenham. His dynamic presence has changed the complexion of the side, taking them from being a mid-table outfit to Champions League finalists. However, in the ongoing term, Spurs have been struggling from day one.
With injuries to several key players across positions, as well as contracts of players like Jan Vertonghen, Toby Alderweireld, Christian Eriksen and Danny Rose set to expire in the summer, there is palpable tension among the ranks.
And the disharmony is clearly reflecting in their results this season. In such a situation, Pochettino’s future seems uncertain. If Spurs plummet further down the standings, it will be interesting to see if Daniel Levy turns to Mourinho.
The Portuguese tactician will have his work cut out for him but as far as his past credentials are concerned, few can be more qualified. And to that end, appointing him as the new manager could pay off richly for Levy.
Although Mourinho might not be loved by many, one cannot deny that he has a no-nonsense winning mentality. And that is something Tottenham need right now.
They need to stop being satisfied with just finishing in the top four and aim for trophies – the Premier League, the Europa League, the Champions League, the League Cup – anything that they can get their hands on. With that in mind, who better than Mourinho to take them to the next level? ‘
As far as transfers are concerned, the former Manchester United manager is more than capable of attracting top-class players.
Of course, he might not be able to splash out big bucks and sign the likes of Paul Pogba and Alexis Sanchez but his shrewdness in these dealings can work wonders for Tottenham on a long-term basis.
Thus, all said and done, Tottenham would be wise to turn to Mourinho in case they end up sacking Pochettino anytime soon.
