Tottenham Opinion: Why Spurs should make a move for Matt Doherty?
Back in January, The Irish Independent reported that Tottenham were interested in signing Wolves star Matt Doherty. However, a move didn’t materialise and the defender went onto sign a new long-term contract with Wolves in February.
Matt Doherty, 27, has been sensational for Wanderers this season, helping Nuno Espirito Santo’s side finish seventh with a game still to be played. He has not missed a single game in the Premier League, bagging four goals and five assists.
Considering his consistent displays for Wolves, Tottenham must definitely reignite their interest in the 27-year-old defender.
Tottenham have to reinforce their side in the summer transfer window, as Mauricio Pochettino looks to outdo both Manchester City and Liverpool to the title. He has a good core at the club but needs a strong supporting cast. The north Londoners need a new right-back, or at least competition for the existing options.
Kieran Trippier has had a very poor season in comparison to his dazzling displays for England at the World Cup in Russia last summer. The 28-year-old has made constant errors, failing to provide the reliability in the right-back position. Meanwhile, Serge Aurier has also blown hot and cold, spending majority of the campaign on the treatment table.
The right-back area has been a problem for Pochettino, who needs stability and consistency in that position, but it appears neither Trippier nor Aurier can provide it. Thus, Spurs must spend big to sign Doherty when the summer transfer window opens.
While Doherty has excelled at right wing-back position for Wolves, he is capable of playing as a right-back as well as a right midfielder. He is much more attacking than Trippier and can defend better than Aurier. The Irishman has consistently played football at the highest level this season and has never fazed from the challenge despite playing the likes of Liverpool and Manchester City.

Doherty’s attacking qualities, work-rate and defensive discipline makes him a top class option for Spurs. The 27-year-old is someone that can step in and has more than enough in his locker to make an immense difference for the north London outfit. It’s what makes the Irishman effectively an upgrade over both Trippier and Aurier.
Verdict
Tottenham need to actively start fighting for some of the best players available in the Premier League and that’s exactly why Doherty is the perfect man to take Pochettino’s side to another level next season.
