Why a new deal for Hugo Lloris is the right step by Tottenham

According to The Athletic (h/t Football.london), Hugo Lloris could be in line to receive a new contract from Tottenham. This comes after the club started discussions about extending the deals of the players whose deals run out in the near future.

The 33-year-old French goalkeeper started his youth career at CEDAC Cimiez Nizza in 1993 and moved to OGC Nizza after 4 years. After climbing through the youth teams, he was promoted to the B team in 2004.

He was called to the senior side a few times that season and was ultimately promoted by the end of the season. In 78 appearances for OGC Nice, he kept 30 clean sheets. He moved to Olympique Lyon in 2008. He established himself as one of the best emerging keepers during that time as he went on to play over 200 games for them.

Finally, Spurs signed him in 2012. Since then, he has become the club captain and made 332 appearances to date, keeping 112 clean sheets (source – Transfermarkt). The veteran shot-stopper is also the captain of the national team and has over 100 appearances, winning the 2018 FIFA World Cup as well.

A new contract for Lloris will be the correct decision

Lloris’ current deal expires in 2022. However, the club are trying to secure the futures of their star players. It was reported that Heung-Min Son will be the first in line to receive a new deal. Then comes the captain.

The 33-year-old has been a faithful servant of the club for close to a decade now and has been with the club through thick and thin. He is yet to win a trophy with the club but has never contemplated leaving for another team.

As a player, he has kept high standards in goal and only allowed the rare bad performance for which fans can forgive him. A solid shot-stopper who is also decent with the ball at his feet too. Spurs have benefited a lot from his miraculous saves time and again.

A new contract is the right decision from Spurs given Lloris can still play at this level for a few more years at the least. Moreover, he is their captain and he deserves to get a new deal after such a long journey at the club.
