Newcastle United interested in signing Stoke City star Tyrese Campbell in January

According to transfer news on The Sun, Newcastle United are interested in signing Stoke City star Tyrese Campbell in January. The star striker recently returned from injury and scored for the Potters in their 2-0 victory against Queens Park Rangers.

The 21-year-old is a product of the Man City academy but had to leave the club due to lack of chances in the first-team. He joined Stoke City in 2016 and has since moved up their ranks. After a six-month loan move to Shrewsbury Town between January and May 2019, the striker was promoted to the senior team.

Could he now leave the Championship club? And is he the forward Eddie Howe needs at Newcastle United?

Since being promoted to the senior team in 2019, Campbell has been good for the Red and White. He has made 75 appearances for the Potters and has racked up 20 goals and 10 assists. He could have added more to his tally last season, but an injury prevented him from doing so. In fact, he was also linked to Everton, but that move also fell through due to similar reasons.

Howe will now try to bring the centre-forward to St. James’ Park. The English manager was appointed by the richest club in the world last month, and he recently guided the club to their first league victory of the season. However, goals have been hard to come by for the Geordies this season.

That would have been fine if they did not possess one of the worst defences in the league this season. Callum Wilson has been their highest-scorer this season with 6 goals but there has been little contribution from others. Moreover, they do not have a goal-scoring striker if Wilson gets injured, which he already has once this season.

The 47-year-old boss has known of Campbell’s talents since his time at Man City. The striker is fast and has an ‘eye for goal’, both qualities that the Toon Army could use this season. Additionally, Howe knows what he is talking about, as his Bournemouth sides were often free-scoring.

Their defending might not have been the best, but the Englishman does know how to generate the goals. The Stoke City ace could help him do so, and the new owners need to back the gaffer if they hope to avoid relegation this term.

A deal for Tyrese Campbell is financially viable

Newcastle are ready to offer Stoke City £20million to sign the soon-to-be 22-year-old. It might be a fair valuation to the Magpies, but there is little known about the interest of the Championship club in offloading their prized asset and if they would entertain that offer.

Thus, there are several complexities to be considered before getting the young attacker to the Toon. However, he could be the start of something special. The Geordies might have all the money in the world now, but their investment needs to be smart and sound. Bringing in players below the age of 22 could be a smart investment for the present while also not overlooking the future.

Experienced professionals are required in and around the team, but the core needs to be built around the youth. This is a long-term project, and the Saudi-led consortium would need to have some patience before seeing the results of their potential investment.

Signing Campbell is being touted as the start of a new revolution, and the Manchester-born striker would do well to prove his worth in the top-flight. He is not the biggest name in European football, but the Toons would have to be realistic with their targets. They might have money but are currently in a relegation dogfight and risk relegation if this form doesn’t improve.
