Born in London, Ontario on March 11, 1997, Travis Konecny grew up in Clachan with his family. Although his town did not have its own ice rink, Konecny honed his hockey skills on frozen ponds and watched games. He began playing minor ice hockey with the Chatham-Kent Cyclones but moved to Mount Brydges at age 14 to join the Elgin-Middlesex Chiefs. Despite being smaller than most of his teammates, he was known for his physical style of play and scoring abilities. The team won the Alliance championship, with Konecny receiving a 10-minute misconduct penalty in the final game for fighting.
Selected first overall in the 2013 OHL draft, Travis Konecny had a dominant rookie season with the Ottawa 67’s. He scored 26 goals and 44 assists and led all OHL rookies in scoring. Konecny was named Rookie of the Month on four out of six opportunities and received the Emms Family Award for OHL Rookie of the Year. He was also named to the OHL First All-Rookie team at centre. The Philadelphia Flyers selected Konecny in the first round of the 2015 NHL Entry Draft. After attending the Flyers’ training camp, he was sent back to the 67’s in time for the 2015–16 OHL season before becoming part of a major trade with the Sarnia Sting.
