Twitter overflowed with messages congratulating American Sofia Kenin after she claimed her maiden Australian Open title defeating Spain’s Garbine Muguruza at the Rod Laver Arena on Saturday.
She recorded an excellent 4-6, 6-2, 6-2 win against Muguruza to walk away with the honours. It is also the 21-year old’s first-ever Grand Slam title since turning a professional in 2017.
Tennis fans from all over the world were quick to shower praises upon the young American congratulating her and sharing pictures of her via social media handle twitter.
This was the youngster’s best-ever performance in a Slam event so far in her career with a fourth-round exit in last year’s French Open being the previous best.
Meanwhile, Muguruza’s wait for a first Australian Open title still continues after she fumbled in the final stages losing to Kenin despite having a good start.
A former World No. 1 and two-time Grand Slam winner – Wimbledon (2017) and French Open (2016), this has been the Spaniard’s best show at the year’s first Major tournament.
Sofia Kenin is the youngest Australian Open champion in 12 years since Russia’s Maria Sharapova achieved a similar feat back in 2008 aged 20.
On Monday, Kenin, who is currently ranked 15th in the world will become the top-ranked American woman surpassing legend Serena Williams to bag the No.7 ranking.
