Felix Auger-Aliassime is officially a pro tennis champion.
Canada’s Auger-Aliassime wins first ATP title, beating top-seeded Stefanos Tsitsipas of Greece in Rotterdam. Félix Auger-Aliassime won his first career title at the ninth attempt, upsetting top-seeded Stefanos Tsitsipas 6-4, 6-2 in the Rotterdam final on Sunday to deny his opponent an eighth title.
“Rotterdam is and always will be a special place in my career, so I hope to be back for many years to come. Thank you all and let’s go for more” Felix expressed his feelings on twitter.
After many shots at his first career title, Felix Auger-Aliassime is officially a pro tennis champion.
Going 0-8 in nine previous ATP Finals, the 21-year-old Montreal native defeated Stefanos Tsitsipas in straight sets to capture his first ATP championship at the Rotterdam Open.
A triumphant Auger-Aliassime fell to the court in celebration before going over to congratulate Tsitsipas, the tournament’s top seed and the No. 4 seed in the world on the ATP rankings.
Canadian tennis player Vasek Pospisil has congratulated Felix Auger-Aliassime on winning his maiden ATP title. Auger-Aliassime, 21, captured his maiden ATP title after beating No. 1 seed Stefanos Tsitsipas 6-4 6-2 in the Rotterdam final.
“Huge congrats to @felixtennis on his first title!! Long overdue. Hardworking, humble and overall great guy. Congrats buddy, super happy for you!” Pospisil tweeted.
It was the second appearance in the Rotterdam final for Auger-Aliassime, having lost to Gael Monfils in 2020.
“It has not been the smoothest road since my first final three years ago,” Auger-Aliassime said during the trophy ceremony. “It is an amazing day for me to get my first title and especially here. I played my first ATP main draw here a couple of years ago, so it is right I won my first title here.” [via Daily Hive]
In his five matches in Rotterdam, Auger-Aliassime won three of them in straight sets, including a round of 16 victory over former world No. 1 Andy Murray.
After Canada’s win at the ATP Cup, Auger-Aliassime hit a career-high ranking of ninth in the world last month. Auger-Aliassime then kicked off his Grand Slam season by making it to the Australian Open quarterfinals but fell in a five-set thriller to eventual champion Daniil Medvedev.
Felix Auger-Aliassime’s career
Auger-Aliassime is a Canadian professional tennis player. He is the second-youngest player ranked in the top 20 by the Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP), and has a career-high singles ranking of No. 9, which he achieved on 10 January 2022, and doubles ranking of No. 60, attained on 1 November 2021.
Auger-Aliassime began competing on the professional tour at a young age. On the second-tier ATP Challenger Tour, he is the youngest player to win a main draw match at 14 years and 11 months old, and is one of seven players to win a Challenger title by the age of 16. He is the second-youngest to win multiple Challenger titles at 17 years and one month, and the youngest player to defend a Challenger title at 17 years and ten months.
Auger-Aliassime had a successful junior career, reaching No. 2 in the world and winning the 2016 US Open boys’ singles title. He also won the previous year’s boys’ doubles title at the 2015 US Open with compatriot Dennis Shapovalov.
On the ATP Tour, Auger-Aliassime made his top 100 and top 25 debuts at age 18 in a year highlighted by his first ATP final in February 2019 at the Rio Open, an ATP 500 event. He reached three ATP finals in 2019, another three in 2020, and two finals in 2021, a total of eight consecutive runners-up out of eight ATP finals as well as the semifinals at the 2021 US Open.
