Two missed targets Everton should sign in January
Everton were not hesitant in splashing the cash this summer under the guidance of new manager Marco Silva. The Toffees even had to pay over the odds to secure the services of Brazilian winger Richarlison from Watford. The signing of Yerry Mina from Barcelona did not come cheap either and the acquisition of Kurt Zouma from Chelsea on a loan deal further strengthened the defence.
Everton are still unbeaten in the ongoing season under Silva with one win and three draws from their first four games. While they should be happy with their unbeaten run, improving on certain areas should be the priority of the team.
And they could revive their interest in some of their missed targets in January. Here are two of them: –
1. William Carvalho
The 26-year-old central midfielder played a vital role in Portugal’s 2016 Euro Cup win. According to Daily Star, Carvalho was linked with a move to Goodison Park in the summer as his contract at Sporting Lisbon was about to expire. However, the deal did not materialise. The player has now signed a five-year contract with the La Liga club Real Betis.
Considering that the 26-year-old recently signed a long-term deal, Everton might have to make a handsome bid for him. But he should be worth all the money. The Toffees do not have the best defensive record in the Premier League and the Portuguese international should be the perfect shield for their leaky defence.
Carvalho has the ability to keep the ball moving in the midfield with his good range of passing. He also has the propensity to make crucial tackles and interceptions in the centre of the park. He is adept at dispossessing the opposition and setting up counter attacks.
Carvalho should be the perfect addition to the squad in the central midfield alongside Morgan Schneiderlin and Idrissa Gana Gueye.
2. Bas Dost
According to Liverpool Echo, the 29-year-old Dutch centre-forward was linked with a move to Everton this summer from Portuguese giants Sporting Lisbon.
Dost did not enjoy much success for the Netherlands at the international arena and chose to retire from his national duties in 2018. But he has a prolific goalscoring record at the club level. The centre-forward netted 72 goals from 91 appearances for Sporting Lisbon across all competitions.
A prolific marksman standing at 6ft 5inches, Dost should be the ideal target man for Everton. He boasts of exceptional physical strength and remarkable aerial ability. Apart from that, he is very clinical with his finishing and should be the ideal man to link up with Richarlison and Theo Walcott in the final third.
Oumar Niasse has been below par so far and Yannick Bolasie has been loaned out to Aston Villa. Signing Dost would give Everton more options up front and the towering centre-forward should act as cover and competition for Cenk Tosun.
