Two players Everton must consider signing in the January window
Everton have made a good start to their Premier League campaign this season, playing some impressive free-flowing football. While their attacking play has been a treat to watch, the Toffees should be disappointed for not boasting of a perfect record under new manager Marco Silva.
Their success can be mostly credited to their attackers so far. The defenders have been rather sloppy, failing to keep the team’s lead intact on most occasions.
Silva did not hesitate to splash the cash in the summer transfer window, bringing in radical reinforcements to the club. And for the most part, his new signings have not disappointed him. Richarlison, Bernard and Lucas Digne have all hit the ground running, while Yerry Mina is yet to make his debut.
Everton already have a solid squad and should be able to challenge the big guns in the Premier League for a Champions League spot this season. However, Silva should add more players to his squad in January.
Here are two players Everton could sign in the winter transfer window.
1. Geoffrey Kondogbia
The Frenchman currently plays for Spanish club Valencia and could be an invaluable addition to Everton’s squad with his ability to play as a defensive midfielder and a left-back.
Standing at 6ft 2 inches, the towering midfielder has all the ammunition in his repertoire to dominate the central areas of the park. He is good at reading the game and tends to dispossess his opponents with his excellent tackling and ball interception skills.
The former Inter Milan man also has a good range of passing and can help the team counter-attack after winning the ball in the midfield. Apart from that, his long-range shooting and aerial ability should be an added asset to the Toffees.
Given that he can play as a left-back as well, Kondogbia could fill in the boots of Leighton Baines, who has struggled lately.
2. Matteo Darmian
The Italian right-back made his move to Manchester United from Serie A club Torino back in the 2015/16 season. Although he has been provided with enough game time in his earlier years, Darmian seems to have fallen out of favour under current manager Jose Mourinho.
A technically sound player, Darmian is good with his positioning and rarely allows the opposition too much space down the sides. He is good with his tackling as well and can keep his composure during key moments.
Although the Italian is defensively solid, he does not take too many risks while going forward. He tends to stick to his position more often than not and that should make him an ideal buy for Everton, as Seamus Coleman is more of an attacking right-back who has failed to contribute defensively in the recent past.
