Two players Rangers should offload in the January transfer window
It has been an interesting season for Rangers under new manager Steven Gerrard. The former Liverpool and England captain has done a solid job at the Ibrox Stadium so far.
While failing to make it to the finals of the Scottish League Cup final will be a disappointment, the Gers have stayed in touch with league leaders Celtic and are just two points behind them and have a chance of progressing through to the knockout phases of the UEFA Europa League as well.
To ensure that Rangers finish the season on a similar note, a few tweaks to the squad might be required in the January transfer window. While there is a good chance of a couple of players coming into the side in the winter, Gerrard should also look to get rid of some of the players that don’t feature in his plans moving forward.
To that end, here are two players that the Light Blues should be letting go of in a couple of months’ time;
Umar Sadiq
The 21-year-old lanky forward arrived in the summer on a season-long loan from AS Roma. However, it wouldn’t be wrong to say that the move has backfired for both the player and the club.
So far in his time with Rangers, the Nigerian has featured on just 4 occasions across all competitions – only one of which has been from the kickoff. Sadiq has seen just 116 minutes of action on the field in total and has no goals or assists to show for during that period.
With Alfredo Morelos and Kyle Lafferty miles ahead of him in the pecking order at the Ibrox, it does seem highly unlikely that the 21-year-old’s chances will improve. And considering how he has failed to make the most of whatever little opportunities that came his way, the Gers would be better off cutting his loan spell short in January and reinforcing their striking options with someone else.
Lee Wallace
From suffering a double hernia that kept him out of action for a lengthy spell to getting suspended and heavily fined for a heated altercation with Gerrard’s predecessor Graeme Murty, the 2017/18 season was a bit of a disastrous one for the left-back.
Under Gerrard, the 31-year-old was stripped of the captaincy and has taken the field just once for a minute as a substitute in the 3-3 draw against Motherwell back in August. In total, the Scottish full-back has made the matchday squad on just four occasions
Despite summer signing Borna Barisic’s injury, Andy Halliday and Jon Flanagan remain ahead of Wallace in the pecking order, clearly suggesting that he doesn’t feature in the plans of the manager going forward. There was interest in Wallace from Wigan Athletic (h/t Scottish Sun) and given that the left-back is in the final year of his deal, the Gers would be better off cashing in on him in January.
