Two players who must leave Chelsea before the European transfer deadline

The English transfer window slammed shut 9th August but the European transfer window doesn’t close till the end of the month. This allows certain clubs like Chelsea, who have a large pool of players, to ship off the deadwood either permanently or on loan.

With that in mind, here are two players who must leave the club before the continental deadline.

Danny Drinkwater

Drinkwater moved to Chelsea from Leicester City on deadline day last summer. Signed by Antonio Conte, the player was specifically brought in to rekindle his partnership with N’Golo Kante and help Chelsea defend their Premier League crown.

But things didn’t work out as Drinkwater made only 5 starts in the Premier League during the whole 2017/18 season. In fact, his lack of game time prevented him from booking a spot in Gareth Southgate’s 23-man squad for the World Cup.

Even under new manager Maurizio Sarri, Drinkwater has failed to make the squad. With the arrival of Mateo Kovacic (on loan) from Real Madrid, Drinkwater has clearly been pushed further down the pecking order.

Chelsea already have the likes of Ross Barkley, Cesc Fabregas and Ruben Loftus-Cheek to aid midfield duo Jorginho and Kante. Maybe it’s time for the former Premier League winner to end his Chelsea nightmare as soon as possible and revive his career in a foreign land.

Victor Moses

The Nigerian international was one of the first names on the team sheet for Conte but that has drastically changed under Sarri. Victor Moses was originally a winger, who was deployed at right wing-back in the 2016/17 season. Fortunately, that proved to be a masterstroke as Chelsea went on to win the title that year.

But now, Sarri deploys his Chelsea troops in a 4-3-3 system where Cesar Azpilicueta is given the job of the club’s first-choice right-back and Davide Zappacosta is his backup.

At 27 years of age, Moses is hitting his peak and would need regular playing time which he is unlikely to receive at Stamford Bridge. A move abroad would make sense for all parties involved as Chelsea would get another fringe players off their books while Moses will get the minutes he deserves.
