Tyson Fury, who goes by the nickname ‘Gypsy King’, is a British professional boxer. He is a two-time heavyweight world champion, having held the WBC, The Ring magazine and lineal titles since defeating Deontay Wilder in February 2020. Previously he held the unified WBA (Super), IBF, WBO, IBO, The Ring, and lineal titles after defeating Wladimir Klitschko in 2015.
Fury suffered from mental health issues leading to alcoholism, recreational drug use and extreme weight gain in 2016, which led to him getting stripped of his titles. After over two years of inactivity, the 31-year-old made a return in 2018.
As of April 2020, he is ranked as the world’s best active heavyweight by ESPN, the Transnational Boxing Rankings Board (TBRB), and BoxRec, as well as the second-best active boxer, pound for pound, by BoxRec, sixth by the TBRB, and seventh by ESPN.
Apart from his pro-boxing career, Fury also made multiple appearances on World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE), where he worked an angle with Braun Strowman. In the same year, he released his autobiography ‘Behind the Mask: My Autobiography’, which has sold more than 200,000 copies.
Tyson Fury’s net worth is believed to be around $140 million in 2024, as reported by The Sun. This figure should increase with the Brit still having two bouts left on his bumper £80million five-fight deal with ESPN. He also earns through endorsement with WoW Hydrate.
According to Forbes, the 35-year-old made a cool $50million in earnings from boxing in the last year, placing him 11th on the list of world’s highest-paid athletes for 2020. Apart from that, he also made $7million from endorsement deals.
The major source of his earning during the period was from his last fight against Deontay Wilder, from which he reportedly pocketed $26million.
The Gypsy King also made $15million from his WWE appearance at PPV event Crown Jewel, when he was victorious over Braun Strowman via count-outs.
Tyson fury has a boxing record of 34-1-1 so far in his career.
He won the English heavyweight title in 2009, beating John McDermott. Two years later, he defeated Dereck Chisora to win the British and Commonwealth heavyweight titles.
In 2012, he won the Irish heavyweight title, knocking out Martin Rogan and backed it up with the WBO Intercontinental title when he defeated Vinny Maddalone.
His biggest fight came in 2015, when he beat Wladimir Klitschko for the WBA (Super), IBF, WBO, IBO, The Ring, and lineal titles. However, he held the IBF belt for only 10 days before being stripped off of it as he was unable to grant a fight with the IBF’s mandatory challenger, Vyacheslav Glazkov, due to a rematch clause in his contract with Klitschko.
The rematch did not materialise as Fury suffered from mental health issues, leading to him vacating the WBA, WBO, and IBO titles in 2016, while The Ring stripped him of his last remaining title in early 2018.
He made a comeback later that year, challenging Deontay Wilder for the WBC heavyweight title. The match was controversially called a draw.
However, a rematch in February 2020 saw Fury defeat Wilder to win the WBC and The Ring heavyweight titles.
He then went on to once again defeat Wilder in 2021, before going on to beat Dillian Whyte and Chisora.
