Jones started his basketball career in his high school, Eastview High School. On seeing his skills, Tyus received a scholarship offer from Lowa but he denied it. In his freshman season, he averaged 20.1 points with 7.1 assists per game. Among the various offers he received, he also got an invite from the USA Basketball team for the tryouts. Out of the 27 called athletes, Jones was one of the players to get selected for the 12-man FIBA Americas Under-16 Championship team. Tyus played a crucial role in winning the Under-16 Championship. Throughout his high school career, Tyus maintained his form.
Among all the offers from various colleges, Tyus wished to play for Duke. Tyus’s entry to Duke was the talk of the town and there were rumours that he will be starting for Duke as Tyler Thornton graduates. At the start of the season, Jones started alongside Cook and in his debut match against Presbyterian he averaged 15 points with 7 assists. His magic form continued and was named to the John R. Wooden Award Midseason Top 25 list. Tyus bagged the maximum awards he can during his college career. Jones decided to skip his last three years of college and enter the 2015 NBA draft.
Jones was picked by the Cleveland Cavaliers in the 2015 NBA draft and was later traded to the Minnesota Timberwolves considering the 2019 second-round draft pick. Jones’s first shoot for Cleveland Cavaliers came against the Charlotte Hornets on November 10. The Timberwolves sent Jones to play for the Idaho Stampede, the D-League affiliate of the Utah Jazz.
