UFC 272: Covington vs Masvidal – Preview

Published by

Colby Covington and Jorge Masvidal, once best buddies now bitter foes will take center stage at the T-Mobile Arena in Paradise, Nevada on the 5th of March, 2022.

Since Khabib Nurmagomedov vs Conor McGregor in 2018, there has hardly been so much bad blood between two fighters. The very fact that a non-title fight is headlining a major PPV event speaks volumes about their rivalry.

Both the fighters, coincidentally, are coming off a loss against welterweight champion Kamaru Usman. While Covington lost to the Nigerian via. unanimous decision (at UFC 268), Masvidal was brutally KOed by Usman at UFC 261.

Colby Covington’s journey in the UFC has been an absolute roller coaster. To think that he was one pitted to be cut from the company for his boring style and lack of persona, Covington made a 360-degree switch and embraced his nickname of ‘Chaos.’

Covington has to stay in a kick-boxing or shoot-boxing range against a pure boxer like Masvidal.

He has to immediately take center of the octagon, which he usually does pretty effectively and keep Masvidal in range with teep kicks, mid-section kicks and attacking the knee caps.

Covington does not have the best jiu-jitsu or submission game in the division, but watching him attempt some submission would be interesting. His cardio, pressure and composure are his biggest paths to victory at UFC 272.

In a vast combat journey that has spread over two decades, Jorge Masvidal’s story is an inspiration to many. Coming from a squalid upbringing, Masvidal has built his legacy brick by brick and has emerged into one of the greatest superstars today.

Although Masvidal is calm inside a storm, this fight is extremely personal and emotions can get loose. He has to ensure that he approaches the fight with a five-round viewpoint slant, because Covington has superior cardio.

Masvidal has a good takedown defense of 75%, which has to be on full throttle in this fight. He needs to calculate the timing on Covington’s takedown shot and land an explosive blow [uppercut or flying knee] when he moves in.

Masvidal might also want to execute a takedown of his own by catching one of Colby’s patented body kicks and putting him on his back.
